Left Items Protocol?
« on: 14 May 2024, 06:40:54 am »
I have seen this client 3x, Mr average, polite. friendly not to demanding an easy client.

Last week after he had left, his mobile rang it was in the side of the sofa with a set of keys.  He had been gone 5 minutes, it rang of course I looked and a women but i didn't answer.   All I could do was stick it under the pillow in the spare bedroom, luckily the ring volume was low.

The next client was due so I got ready, he was a new client so I am always more anxious, this time it was worse as I was expecting a knock on the door, fortunately that didn’t happen.

I contacted the client via AW that was 2 days ago, but no response.  I suspect he has taken the phone to be lost, lots of calls/messages texts for 24 hours and now nothing so its disconnected?.

Of course its partly my fault for not checking he had everything as he left but I suspect it fell out of his pocket?  I keep thinking what should I have done?

If he contacted me via AW I would happily make arrangements to return it, but don’t want a random knock on the door.  As it is I will keep it for a while (how long) and then put it in the rubbish.  How do others handle this situation?

I'm amazed he didn't come straight back for it, especially as he'd left his keys too, must have been a major embuggerance for him. Since he didn't though, and he must know where he left them, you can do no more than you've already done by messaging him on AW.

Occasionally a client will forget his phone or glasses and I'll get a sheepish tap at the door just a few minutes after they've stepped out, usually before I've even noticed they've left anything behind. One man messaged me about 5 mins after leaving to say he'd left his glasses in the bathroom but that I could keep them  ???

If that were me I would keep the items for six months then throw them away. You have emailed him so that is all you can do.

You can check whether he has read the message on AW by looking at it in the send folder. And if you know his number you could text his number as he probably has the same number on his new phone. Perhaps he genuinely didn't know where he had lost it.

I would hold on to it fora long time.

I always ask them to check they have everything as I don't want them coming back especially if I'm in a booking !

You've contacted him by AW, this is all you can do.

I would keep the phone possibly check it occasionally incase he contacts it from another phone. I'm guessing he doesn't have a punting phone?

Lost property can be difficult particularly if I've already run over and the person has to come back.

Oh thats shit i seem to get a lot of apple watches left behind and i always just drop them off at the hotel reception if the client hasnt contacted me by the end of my tour. I never text clients first so if they leave something its on them to contact me and ask. I really do not know what id do with leftover things if i had my own work flat. Good luck xx

I've had jumpers, glasses and a whole wash bag left behind. I usually call them if it's within a few minutes of them leaving. I've had a clients glasses since December, they're destined for the bin this week!
I try to make sure all their stuff is left together in one pile to avoid them forgetting stuff.

I hung on to a pair of sunglasses for about 3 years (I had contacted the client via AW), eventually gave them back when he rebooked lol he was amazed I still had them.
