Cutting timewasters' games on the phone
« on: 12 December 2011, 04:39:25 pm »
It often happens that when a punter calls I know from his first few words that I don't want to see him. Usually these types sound sort of, say, overconfident, in lack of a better word to describe them. Their opeing line is something like "Hi darling, are you working today?" said on a tone of self-entitelment. Or the ones starting with "Whereabouts are you?" when my website clearly says that, unless specific days are marked in the calendar, I only do outcalls.

Because these sort of lines aren't something explicitly rude or objectionable, I feel pulled to make the timewaster's game and contine the conversation with him, asking him what his name is and what I could do for him. All this while I already know that I wont see him. The other option would be to just hang up on him or to say something like "sorry mate, I don't like how you sound, so I won't see you". But I am feeling uneasy saying this after the guy barely spoke a few words. I'm not sure if these guys are pulling these manipulative tricks deliberately or they just have low IQ.

I would like to know how you handle these callers ont the phone. Do you hang up on them or do you indulge them into some conversation? What do you say to them?

Generally I say something along the lines of -

"Sorry I am booked up until X oclock.".

Then store the number and don't pick up again.

I know what you mean, sometimes your 'spidey senses' start tingling and you know you wont EVER take a booking from them no matter what. I tend to say 'Sorry but I cant talk now' and hang up.

The reason I 'cant talk now' is because I know they're wasting my time but I dont need feel the need to tell them that, or in fact to offer any explanation at all.

Then its just the ESSENTIAL step as Ambs recommends...

....store the number and don't pick up again.

I am paranoid, and I don't want to let them know the reason, so they won't "fix" it and snow me, somehow--even though I DO save numbers.... so I only tell them I won't see them when it's in response to a stupid question like "how much" "What do you do" etc. Then I tell them I don't answer those calls on the phone and they need to have another review of my profile--which they NEVER do. Fortunately, these are usually the same guys who CLEARLY have no idea who I am and have likely saved my number under "whore" or something. Because I have even had them ask "what's your name again?" At which point I tell them I'm not going to make up for their laziness and I hang up.

I also use the "I've already had one incall, today, and I only do one, maximum, a day." This also serves to send them away without getting their ire up. I'm probably giving 90% of these particular types more credit than they are due, but...

I'm another, who if i dont like sound of voice on phone will simply tell them i dont have any availability for 'x' hours and tell them to call back in 'x' hours and if i've had any cancellation I may be able to  fit them in.

Their number is then noted on phone and like others I just dont answer it (if they do call back) but 9 times out of 10 they will find someone else in the meantime so situation over .........................

I'm stealing many of the ideas in this thread! :D "I can't talk now" is brilliant, cos you can just pretend to be in the supermarket or something; they don't need to know any different. And like YourTera says, it is really important not to let these guys know directly that you don't want to see them, lest they get nasty or even try to trick you into seeing them in future somehow; obviously it's much more likely that they'll just take the hint and move swiftly onto the next girl, but it's just important to protect ourselves from the many odd'uns out there. I also just answer any silly questions with, "I can't discuss that sort of thing on the phone, I'm sorry, but it's written on my website so you can just find all the answers there and call me back later", which works pretty well cos they obviously already knew that and were only testing the waters with you, so they never call back once they know you won't let them waste your time making fantasy bookings.

Like the OP, I just find so often that I know within the first few words of any email or call whether or not the client is a genuine, nice-seeming one. The obnoxious ones, as part of their obnoxiousness, obviously see nothing wrong with their own behaviour so fortunately they remain extremely conspicuous! I do always say that you can basically let bad clients screen themselves out for you by just giving them enough leeway to be their horrid selves - so thank God for that, I suppose. :D

I find that some are so thick / stupid / insensitive
that despite me saying I'm currently:
  • Having coffee ATM with my mum,
  • Administering CPR to a stranger collapsed in the street,
  • Being interviewed by the police in connection with a stalking allegation
that they still demand a run-down of fees and services!

So, rather than rely on their good judgement and awareness
(which is lacking in most men when they have the horn)
I put the ball in their court.
I let them decide they actually don't want to see me, ever.

This works:
Oh sorry I cant see anybody for the next few weeks;
I'm on anti-biotic's to clear up a mild dose of gonorrhoea.
  :-X

For some reason, they never ever phone me back... ;D

Isn't it funny that those that call to say :

1..  Where are you?
2..  What hours do you work?

Then go on to the dreaded ........... what are your services ?

Actually very very rarely are a serious punter!

I tend to say that I don't discuss services on the phone.  I say everything is listed on my site etc etc and to discuss services means I would be on the phone for ages!  (I mean shall I describe every single roleplay/outfit/etc etc !).

Once in exasperation, I said to someone - you wouldn't phone up M & S and ask what they stock would you!

(Silly I know, but it was one of those days...............!).

Incidentallly, it does get my back up sometimes when you hear the "Hi Darling/Babe - how you doing?  Love those photos of you............. "

Another tip - I sometimes say hurriedly, "Sorry got to go, I have someone on his way up to see me!"

I tend to also put the ball in their court, usually by saying something like "I don't think we are going to get along really", or "Obviously if I won't describe your fantasy in full then I'm probably not the girl for  you".

It really irritates me when people don't bother reading your profile, and ask what services you offer. I just tell them to read my profile and call me back, but I rarely answer when they do  :-\

I'm the same. If they haven't read my profile I will NEVER see them. I also hate being called Babe.
I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

I've had that a few times.
I say:
So what you are asking me to do is supply you with a Class A drug?
Is this correct?
Do you have any concerns that I may be an under cover DEA* agent?

They usually go away after that.

I just mentioned this thread to my OH and he asked 'Whats wrong with saying"Fuck Off!" and hanging up?
Empathy, sympathy and tact arent really his his forte but it really really made me laugh - and he kind of has a point!
