Title: Cottage hiring-advise please
Post by: LittleMinx2 on 15 February 2017, 12:21:05 pm
Hi all. I've posted quite a bit recently (I love this forum). Basically I was looking into hiring out a private cottage for a week every month, for incalls. I normally use a hotel, but this idea seemed kinda nice and would cost pretty much the same as 4 nights in a fancy hotel. Anybody done this before? If so, what was it like? Just seems nice as I could have a little house for the week instead of just a room.

I think a bit like AirBnB, this might not be a very wise idea. There's a chance punters could turn up at random when other people are using it. The main thing though is if the owners live nearby, or have some sort of caretaker on hand/nearby who'd see men coming and going: how would you explain it?

So, it might work, but would need due diligence.

I agree with Kay - when I've rented a cottage before, the owner or caretaker has come by at least once during the visit. I would read reviews carefully, because this will often be mentioned (eg "The friendly caretaker Bill popped in every other day to make sure all was okay" etc)

I think if I was going to do this, I'd want to go and stay for a couple of days first without necessarily working and just see what it was like. Are there neighbours overlooking, is there parking nearby for clients, etc.

I used to clean cottages in Scotland. All of them had neighbours close by. There's usually at least one who keeps an eye on things. The more isolated, the more likely people are going to notice different cars parked up. Less isolated means more neighbours right there.

Stick to posh hotels Hun I feel much safer in them so always use hotels . I have never worked from a cottage and never would . Because I go to them a lot for time away and they all have the owners either next door or round the corner same with these small guest houses . There are people around always keeping a look out just incase you was throwing a party they will keep a look out . Cottages seem to really keep a eye on there guests .

Stick to hotels xx

Is is practical to take a suitcase of things in to personalise a stay at a hotel? I wondered if this would avoid the bare hotel look or am I being silly?

I know of ladies who say they use holiday lets, and do really well.

I would guess it all depends on getting the right one.

why would you need to avoid the bare look? I'm prob not the only 1 who books hotels to work hard not interior decorate

I have heard some ladies say they take candles and stuff to hotels. The trouble is, if you're going to let housekeeping in to clean, you're going to have to put all that stuff away (presuming you mean sexy/romantic things.)

If you use an upmarket hotel I think they always look nice enough anyway.

I take and use a candle in my personal life stays, so I don't tidy it away for sexy reasons.

I meant pictures and ornaments and a vase or two with flowers or a nice jewellery box. I never thought about candles or knew hotels would be okay with them!

I haven't been in a hotel for ages or a really nice one so didn't really know how ncie some could be. I imagined it would be horrible stuck in generic business traveller orientated hotels for too many days.

I didn't think hotels would be okay with candles (fire regs)

Most hotels have pictures on the walls (generic prints usually.)

If you're wanting to make the place nice for YOU then bring whatever you can easily fit in your suitcase. If you're wanting it to look nice for clients, don't bother - as long as there's a bed and a bathroom, they're really not bothered!

Hurrm may not be the best idea then. I tend to book nice 4 star or good 3 star hotels. They never tend to question anything or the fact I never want the room cleaned whilst I'm there. Cottage looks nice, but I wouldn't want a caretaker or anything popping in x

I thought about doing this and will do this summer. I'm going mostly to take my old cat somewhere nice with lots of gardens before she dies. I'm going to try and find a workable place but if it can't be done, me and my cat will still have a lovely time going on long alks (yep, she's like a dog) If it's workable, I will let you know.

Yes, this would be my concern. It's not going to be as easy to make it obvious that you're only there temporarily (unlike a hotel room - even the dopiest punter isn't likely to think you might still be in Room 567 of the local budget chain a week later) and it's really unfair on other people, plus if it becomes clear who/what they're looking for should they run into the owner you could find yourself blacklisted from not just that set of holiday lets but others too.

No, they're not. I used to take an electric hob with me to cook on if I was away for more than a week or ten days, and I always hid it very carefully when I went out. Plus if the place has very modern/sensitive smoke alarms candles will set them off :(

Oh bless you. My cat has gone the other way - as she gets older, she wants to go out less and less. I hope you can find a place that caters to both your needs. Maybe you could take one booking a day to cover your costs, and screen really carefully?

I've thought about bringing a small microwave with me to some hotels. Especially in the winter I get desperate for some hot food but I resent paying hotel meal prices of ?15 when I could get a ready meal of the same quality for ?3. But I think I'd have to basically take it out to my car if I was to let housekeeping in.

Ta VC. She is 21 and as it's something I've always wanted to do with her, it has to be this year. Looking at a lot of the cottages, they seem to be on the owners' land. Just have to try and find one where owners aren't nearby and then, yes, one a day (I don't care really if I see no one but I'm looking and snooping for future ventures) maybe. Will be too busy taking cat down the fields. She never runs off and we can have picnics etc lolol.

Heck, I've used a candle (I have a small travel one) in many hotels in the last year or two, major chains, as well as independents which aren't ancient buildings/are recently modernised/refitted, perhaps I've gotten lucky ???
