Hi everyone,

Somebody had made an advance booking a few days ago and I asked him to confirm in the morning of the day. Since I didn't hear back from him on the day, I sent him a text asking whether the booking later on was still going ahead and he replied saying that he has already sent me a cancellation message in the evening before that he couldn't make it but I obviously didn't receive anything.

This is the second time this kind of thing happens to me (last time was about a month ago) where the client pretends he sent a cancellation message but I didn't receive anything.

Has anything like this happened to you before ?

Do you think it's real or the client is just a lying timewaster ?

This worries me a bit because if that's actually real, it means there is something wrong with my work phone and that I might have missed out on so many enquiries  :( :(

Ps. I'm pretty much always working in city centres so my signal is always very good and never had issues with it before, I've also done some tests asking some friends of mine to send me texts to see if I receive them and everything works fine, that's why I'm a bit confused

Texts can be delayed, go missing, turn up a long time afterwards BUT I find this is incredibly rare. Also most punters and clients expect acknowledgment if they do not receive this they often try again and or phone. If I was to give a second chance I would advise them 'if you do not receive acknowledgment you must phone me/chase up'. When agreeing confirmation I almost always stipulate 'confirmation by phone call or SMS text no later xxam/pm time, if I do not receive this I may assume the booking is off'.

In my opinion and also personal experience, in those cases, there's not any technical problem, but some clients are just disrespectul!!!
I'm sorry to say that, most of the times, we are just a commodity, and treated accordingly... for 'em a change of plans is in the cards, not something they should worry about.
Only if they had made an advance payment, they are quite careful to send a cancellation advice in due time!

I’ve had this before where a client claimed to have sent a cancellation message but I never received it. In my opinion I think they either forgot the booking or were planning to cancel last minute but want to make themselves look better so you’ll let them book again. This is one of the many reasons why I only allow advance bookings with a deposit. You’d be amazed how these type of situations just disappear when they’ve already paid money  ;D

The chances are high that he is just lying or playing games. I have had it before a few times with them pretending they cancelled but they never did and some have a history of doing this to other women too. Texts can sometimes get delayed but when it comes to the amount of timewasters that contact us he probably is just 1 of many liars we come across.

I occasionally have signal problems, although it tends to affect calls.rather than texts and if they're calling it's because they're in my street. Some networks seems to be more glitchy than others (and being in a built up area can make it worse).

If they don't confirm by the cut off time I just get on with my day, whether that's booking a standby in or doing something else. On the odd occasion where a confirmation text hasn't got through they've always either sent others or tried to call when they didn't get the directions one back from me fairly soon, and I wouldn't contact them in case there was an emergency or something happening.

I get very few timewasters though, to be fair.

Thanks all for your replies, yes I think I should assume that when somebody doesn't send a confirmation message, the booking won't go ahead but sometimes I send them a message myself to ask for confirmation because I want to take the chance in case maybe they forgot to confirm, just to remind them because I don't want to potentially loose the booking in case they just forgot to confirm but are genuine.

I personally don't take deposits but as some of you mentioned, I'm sure that clients are indeed much more careful after paying a deposit (I'm just scared that by making clients pay a deposit, it could turn some genuine people off...)

But yeah in this case the client was most probably lying and as Jasmine89 said he completely forgot about the booking and preferred to lie pretending it's my phone that is not working instead of being honest saying he forgot to cancel to make him look better, this idiot even asked me whether I would give him another chance next time LOL :-\

Well maybe you could ask for a deposit from punters who cancel or don't confirm when they try to book again? I don't, but then I do enough unpaid faff and admin as it is.

I suspect I don't get many of these because I don't take advance bookings, or at least not more than the day before. I'm guessing this one probably did intend to come along when he booked and then completely forgot about it and only remembered when you texted him.

I have had punters 'forget' after they have paid a deposit (and the deposit I require is not insignificant (because of the cancellations & no shows at lower amounts)). Some punters express surprise when I request confirmation even after a deposit payment, it doesn't eliminate no shows/cancellations but it does provide me with recompense if they do, and make up for me either changing my plans around or turning others away. It can be a faff but some are absolutely great, they get the details and pay. Sure these are the ones likely to turn up without a deposit involved, but there are so many shades between. Also some have sent me additional to cover admin or questions they have asked. There's also a number who book a paid phone chat or webcam to discuss a proposed or upcoming booking. Before deposits I found many same day, short notice bookings still cancelled and there are a number now who book short notice then suddenly cannot pay the deposit, cannot make the booking because girlfriend came home/work called them in.  ::)
