It's very likely that there will be blood where his tooth was - if he denies that, getting him to swill out some water into a white basin will show that it's visible.
There's a PDF on tooth extraction on the NHS website: do a search for "pt-info-leaflet-extractions.pdf" and see the bits about avoiding loads of things for the first 24 hours and then needing to do lots of mouth swilling with water+salt.
So I'd definitely leave out anything involving his open mouth apart from him talking. Because his jaw will probably be suffering too, he might not be doing that very well either.
