Title: Changing your website domain name
Post by: joanna1 on 22 May 2012, 07:03:06 pm
Hi!

I hate my website url name / www. address so I've recently bought a new one off 123.reg :)
I want to keep my actual site but just change the url name, is this possible and if so is it a relatively easy or difficult to do? And how would I go about doing it?

Yes, it's possible. How easy it is depends on where / who currently hosts it.

i think it is because i did that  ( or rather my websmaster did it for me ) i had a site called playtimewithparis which i  changed to bristolebonyescort

i think  he just redirected the server to the new domain name or something like that i think its called a 301 or something  as i had my  site for a long time and i people would still click on it so it  was just redirected  s traight to my new site

i think its something to do with whoever you host your website with  if it 123 reg then its probably pretty simple to do as well

you dont want to really lose all the traffic you get from your webstie that you have so iits  is probably best  if your old domain name is due to expire soon then  it might be worth paying for another year or so and holding on to it  so that its still sending traffic to your new site  ( if you see what i mean )

is there not something on 123 reg

there is some stuff here

Pointing the new domain name at the site is easy, and something you will be able to do via the 123-Reg control panel.

The other thing that needs doing is getting wherever hosts the site to recognise that when someone asks for newname.co.uk, they want the site that's there already. That's going to be a couple of minutes work for someone, but who that is and how easy it will be to get them to do it depends on where it's hosted.

Oh, and presumably some of the site text may need changing.
