Change of working name...
« on: 04 June 2009, 08:20:36 am »
Aside from Joey!!! Has anybody here had a change of working name?
How did that go with your regulars?
Did you loose business as a result? Some clients absolutely believe I am Joanna and how is a change of name going to impact that fantasy they have that Jo is Jo and 'theirs?' It would dash that completely perhaps and they would move on to another lady?

Is it advisable to email all the clients you have address for and let them know you have changed your name? If they book Andrea for example and it's Joanna and they realise that when they arrive, they are not going to be so happy are they? Also, those regulars will need a new email address for you? Of course, the old one can be kept up for a while to catch out the odd stray client!

Obviously those with half a brain will recognise the phone number is the same but only a handful of my clients have half a brain I fear!

Thinking I need to get up top of some directories not sit in the middle somewhere being overlooked.
Any advice?

Well I'm starting work with a new agency this weekend and i am planning to change my name. Reasons being that i am trying to 'shake off' my clients from my old agency and start afresh as have had a few instances lately of clients coming to see me who i am connected to in some way (my best friends cousin for example and also someone i went to uni with :o :o) I'm planning on a total reinvention and i find the thought of changing my name very exciting.

I actually posted a very similar thread to this a few days ago,if you have a search for it there is some good advice on their from the other ladies and gents.

I suppose it depends on your reasons for changing your name. Are you trying to loose a troublesome client for example? or are you trying to attract a different type of client and think a name change can help?I can see how as an independent some clients might not like a name change as they are used to thinking of you with the name you already have. I think most clients though have the sense deep down to realise that you are using a fake name (even if they might not let on to you about it) and if they really like you enough i cant see how changing your name would make them stop coming to see you.

I will let you know how my own name change goes (i have to decide on my new name before weekend) Fingers crossed.

Regulars will understand your need to change your name.  Businesses change their names all the time, and after all, you are a business.  I've change mine more than my knickers and it's always worked just fine.

How about a different name for each day of the month? Monique on a monday,Tamsin on a tuesday and so on? It would certainly make things more interesting :D

But seriously,i totally agree. Clients who like you should totally understand if you wish to change your name.

But actually...to answer your question you'd be surprised. This happened to me the other day and I havent changed my name recently! Someone who I met before and didnt have such a great time with had contacted me again and although I knew when I turned on the street I had met him before (all I could say was FUCK, FUCK, FUCK FUCK!) he didnt realize until he opened the door.

Turns out we had an even better time than the 1st since he gave me another try. And the 2nd booking was fucking fabulous. One of the best I've had and we got along well, even though the 1st time sucked and he reminded me I sucked LOL. So I dont think they'll be mad...just surprised.

Clients need to not get scared to hire someone twice, its not like we're going to think they want to marry us  ::)
