[Sex work and taking payments] Cashless Society
« on: 30 March 2022, 02:37:29 pm »
I have to admit this is really now getting to me, as per my comments in the thread about people turning up with no cash wanting to pay with apps/cards/mobile banking and bitcoin.

I live in an area that is very middle class outskirts of London and I am amazed at how many places now wont take my cash, most places do, but it is starting to worry me as more have gone cashless. My clients tell me that I am the only person that they pay in cash and don't carry it at all any more.

No card companies will touch us if we are honest about what we do, no banks will let us open an account if we are honest about what we do.  I used to worry about laws coming into criminalize the client etc., but now I think just doing away with cash will do the job for them.

In the town I live in 2 more banks have recently closed, and the big towns around me have more closing in the next month.  You can use the post office, but I am uncomfortable with that as you have to use the counter, and not a machine which makes it more anonymous.

I wondered if anyone had found any way of taking virtual payments without having to lie about the nature of the business, which risks chargebacks and other issues.

This is something that has also been on my mind too.
Since the pandemic so many more people have gone cashless, I have seen a big increase of my customers asking to pay via online banking app, I’ve allowed this few times but I’m very uncomfortable with clients knowing my name if they found out.
Also I’ve heard they can get the money back. No sure if it’s true or not.
I can see cashless coming very soon.
I hope that cash will still be in circulation. But I can’t see it happening  :FF

I was having this discussion today with a client, He does cash jobs on the side and his bank was asking loads of questions when he tried to put money in his bank, He was told he had to do two separate £500 and not £1000 in one go. My clients still pay cash but it is a worry if cash is shunned. Now your name will show be shown to clients if you they do a bank transfer. Potential sore or stalker clients could make trouble if they got hold of our names.

If it's any comfort, over where I work (Norway), the government itself has been actively pushing for phasing out cash for at least a decade - only one bank in my town accepts physical deposits to an account, for example. And that hasn't stopped places from accepting cash, except for vaguely hipster cafes. I pretty much never even see anyone -use- cash, besides myself, and yet the option remains because there is just no good reason to scrape it.

If by 'cash jobs on the side' you mean he plans to not declare the income and avoid paying tax then he's not only part of the problem, but he's none too bright if he's paying it into his bank account. He'll likely be caught and held to account, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

Getting rid of cash won't happen while it's still discrimatory towards people who struggle with online banking or don't have bank accounts as well as it punishing people on low incomes who need to budget. Back on topic, and Cashapp has been mentioned on the board a few times if you do a search. The deposit thread has some good info IIRC :)

Look at how easy it was for visa and mastercard to be switched off for the Russian people.

This should be a warning to us all. If a different political situation unfolds in future, it could easily be other countries (including us) getting cut off overnight. And if/when we have dispensed with cash in favour of relying digital transactions, it would absolutely turn our lives upside down.

Cash apps terms and conditions do not allow payment for escort services, which means they could reverse the transaction.
Taking money via bank transfer reveals your real name to customers who can then google you.  Gift cards are great for deposits, but not much else.  It really is an utter pain, fingers crossed cash stays for a while longer.

Ditto. There are also situations like a standard financial crisis situations to consider - Greece outright had withdrawal limits on people's accounts during the big financial kerfaffle they experienced good few years back.

They maybe don't, but plenty of people seem to use it - I've only rarely had anybody ask to pay any other way and I can't remember the last time so I haven't looked into it. I am close to plenty of cash machines though so it's maybe easier for people here.

I'll remind everybody else that we need to stay on topic, and the topic is sex work (I appreciate the thread title isn't helping so I'll change it shortly). There are plenty of places online for general discussion topics and this isn't one of them :).

I do wonder how that would affect other types of businesses too. A lot of corner shops and takeaways only use cash as I’ve heard some of them don’t like to pay the additional charges for taking card payments. Apparently a retailer is charged 10p to 20p for every single debit card transaction which I’m sure would add up over time. Some of them even apply surcharges as you do go into certain shops and they say 50p for card payments although this is now illegal from my knowledge. Anyway irrelevant I do feel there would be some protest from those small family own business who are trying to keep every cost down and save as many penny’s as they can.

I take a good proportion of my money into by bank account through online banking. I just tell them they'll get a name mismatch error and they'll have to ignore it. I pay cash in through the post office (around £1k a time). My cash app was closed down.

Does this definitely hide your name, if you give them a fake one? to do bank transfer.  I am really nervous of it revealing my details.
I just did a test and it seemed to work, but will have to try all my banking apps to check.

As Ms Rehead said, when money is transferred online, the bank prefer there to be an exact match with the account name. But you can still receive transfers even with a name mismatch. The payer assumes the risk of paying into the wrong account. So I ask the client to send a £1 first just so you both know that the account details are correct. And then follow up with the balance once you are both happy. There is no way that the actual account name or any other details are revealed. Data protection ensures that.
