Not all cameras use SD cards, so check that, and make sure it is a large capacity one.

If you're trying to work with someone, having a friend of theirs around can be a pain - if they insist on telling you what to do all the time, for example - but any photographer who baulks at you bringing one is not someone you want to be alone and semi-clad with, so well done for telling this one to get stuffed.
