Cant blur my face & cropped pictures won't upload properly
« on: 05 October 2012, 12:56:55 am »
Hi all

I've put this post on here as a last resort because I don't know where else to ask and literally all night (what should be a simple, 5 minute task for someone who knows) I've been trying to blur my face on 6 pictures all night (from 8pm) and I can't freakin do it  :FF

I've downloaded Gimp and the blur tool on there is crap - it blurs so slightly no matter how many times I go over and over my face, FFS I need my face blurring so I'm not recognised and that blur tool is shit!

So I've tried downloading Splashup (shit), Pixlr (shit), Fotoflexor (couldn't find the blur option and only allows 1 photo edit per day)...and done endless googling of 'how to blur photos'...gawd its really doing my head in I'm so pissed off I could throw my laptop out the window.  And I have literally noone to ask :(

I need to blur my face to put some ads up, I'm so pissed off and frustrated off atm :(  its like nothing in life is simple.

Could anyone advise me please of any free sites that offer easy, decent blurring?

Thanks, Jo xxx

Using the blur tool alone is, as you have found out hard work and takes forever.

A quick way is to create a selection for blurring, then use the filters in this case Gaussian blur, and you get the effect as in the image.

That is a 10 second demo using pixlr, you can play around with the selection tools, but hopefully will give you a starting point.

Why not chop your head off like I , am most others do. Or turn your face away, with hair awry.

Apparently techy people can unblur and take off black boxes so better safe than sorry.

Normal people can't really do this at the moment (there isn't 'an app for that'), but they may well be able to in the future when technology develops a little further.

I do second the vote for Pixlr (http://pixlr.com/editor/), though; it's got the basic tools to make a selection and then add a Gaussian blur, which is definitely the quickest way to blur things.

On a related note, does anyone have tips for blurring video? We use photoshop for blurring photos (Gaussian blur works a dream as others have mentioned here) but we've been unable to track down an effective and easy face blurring tool. We've tried quite a few things but they either don't work, don't have the tools that the review we found said, or you have to blur frame-by-frame or keep moving the box which is a pain when someone keeps moving around. Or they export in crappy quality etc.

Ideally, since face detection and tracking is now so easy (many decent Logitech webcams have this feature), there should be an app that allows you to select a face and the app will blur it  as the face moves, exporting the movie to the same quality and filesize as the original. I don't believe there exists anything like this yet but who knows?

Sorry for the slight threadjack - the video blurring problem has bugged us for a while and it would be great if there were a simple solution to fix it!

GIMP works for me (I usually pixellate the area first, then do a Gaussian blur - the results look better than just pixellating and are more secure than just blurring), but no, it's not for everyone.

How do you get Picasa to blur an area? As a photo organiser and 'touch up' program, it's wonderful, but I've never spotted any facility to make things look worse :)

Doing it with video is a pain or involves some neat but expensive software (or sometimes both). It's easier to just wear a mask or other physical disguise.

Apparently techy people can unblur and take off black boxes so better safe than sorry.

Some effects are undoable, more or less, but you can only guess at what's been overwritten by a solid black shape.

I've only read the first post in full and only skimmed the rest, so apologies if this has already been said, but have you tried adjusing the blur tool?

I do my pics with Pixlr or Gimp, and it's alway a 5 minutes job. And there's not jut the blur tool, you can also use the "burn" tool to cver your face with a dark colour, this is what I use and works great for me. All of these tools have a few adjusters for theis "strenght" and other settings - they usually come as sliders in the tool's panel. The preset value for these adjusters is too weak for what you want and on this low settings the effect is indeed very slight as you've seen yourself. But increase the strenght and voila - it'll get you just where you want!

I wondered this too - I don't blur my face so that's not a concern of mine, but I use Picasa for tinkering with/organising photos and I've never noticed a blurring tool? They have brought a few new editions out lately, so I could well have missed it.

I use gimp and never had problems with heavy blur - if you chose "gaussian blur" then you can set how blurred you want it from very light to very heavy

I normally just put a flash effect on face only takes few mins and i think it looks better + i would think its harder to remove (if you believe it can be removed).

Thank you for your help everyone :)

I've had a break from it for a few days...come back to Gimp and I'm pleased to report its now blurring perfectly - I've no idea what was going on before!

The problem I have now though is when I crop photos then upload them to my website part of the photo is missing, even though I resized the cropped pic back to its original size!  I've always cropped using Paint and uploaded cropped pics to my website before with no problems, but for some reason it won't upload the full cropped pic now (theres like 3/4 of my picture sat there in the picture space on my website) - is this a website problem or is it me doing something wrong?

Any one any thoughts?  Its doing my head in now lol

This will be harder to answer without more information about what kind of website you have. Wordpress, Moonfruit, Wix, other?

If you've cropped a picture (so it goes from being, say, 500 pixels high to being 400 pixels high) and then enlarged it to go back to its original size, you'll actually be stretching the pixels that are left post-crop. It's not a good idea to do this. It's easy to shrink images but you cannot make them bigger without creating some extra pixels. I may be misunderstanding you there, but just wanted to note that in case you were stretching your pictures out.

What part of the photo is missing when you upload the cropped pictures?

The height and width ratio of your images might be off now. So, if you picture was 500 x 500 pixels (height and width) but you crop half the face off the top, it'll now be 400 x 500 pixels. If you resize it upwards from the top-right-hand corner, it'll get taller and wider in proportion. So it'll now be 500 x 600 pixels. Your website might be expecting an image that's 500 x 500 so it'll shrink that extra width down to fit, and the gap at the top (those 100 pixels you cropped) will return.

You may be stretching the image upward only, though, to make them 500 x 500 again (sorry - just using those sizes for my example!), in which case this won't be the issue.

If you can PM me a link, I could have a proper rummage. Although not if it's a Flash-based site (Wix, and some Moonfruit, I think?); I can't help you there!

Thank you for your reply Emily!  I don't know what type of website I have -I paid for it from a webdesigner.  I know its not Moonfruit or Wordpress but thats about it.

What I've been doing is cropping 600x400 pixel pictures in Paint, then resizing the cropped pic back to 600x400 pixels (it blurs it a tiny bit but its not particulary noticable).   Is this what I've been doing wrong?

There are windows on my website for my pics to sit in, but theres a big gap at the bottom of these windows when I upload a cropped picture (none of the picture is missing - apart from half my cropped off face obviously lol).

I'm at a loss and I've googled the problem loads but can't find any answers.  What do you think is going on?  ???
