I really think that advertising as a WG needing a flat will attract problem people. You can expect to pay far above regular market value and there's a great possibility that the person will have boundary issues. If you do it, make sure that you have a proper lease agreement and enforce your rights. That is, they can't enter without 24 hours notice, they have to put deposit into the holding account, etc.

Hi OP,

Be warned - Gumtree have recently tightened up their rules regarding any kind of adverts from working girls.

I advertised on there last week for a driver, as I have done several times before over the last two years with no problems. The ad was clear and professional, was posted in the Driver section, and even had a disclaimer on it stating "This is NOT an ad for adult services. Any responses that are not genuine job applications will be deleted and ignored".

Still, they refused to post it as I stated that the role on offer was "escort driver". Not only that, but they will not refund the money I paid for the advert (?40). They say this is their policy now.

In addition they have "restricted my access" meaning I cannot send or receive emails through their system; and nor may I post ads, or respond to ads in any other category.

So, be warned, if you post any ad that mentions in any context that you are a working girl you can expect them to refuse your ad and keep the money you paid as well. Plus they will (in effect) bar you from using their site.

PS Am in an ongoing war with Gumtree over this and will post an update when resolved, if anyone else is interested :)

Yes. That's outrageous behaviour keeping your money and not providing service.

I use Gumtree quite a lot and am dismayed to hear this.

Yes I think it's appalling, I have always liked Gumtree and used them a lot too. I'm pretty shocked that such a well respected and popular site would discriminate against a section of the population in this way.

Anyway thread hijack over  ;D and I will post an update when there is one!

It's clear that they do not want our custom and I would advise steering well clear of it. Unless you want to sell a used car or something.

It's not discrimination against a section of the population. It's finding a trivial and irrelevant excuse to take your money and not provide anything in return. At the very least they should reimburse you. As far as I can see that's theft, plain and simple.

I wouldn't say it's a working flat.  Just say you're looking for a flat if you are posting a seeking ad, then keep your head down and yourself to yourself.

Few landlords would be happy with their premises being used for this purpose, landlords who are openly advertising it are likely to have other issues (want a cut/freebies/cameras).

I agree with you  so much Roseanna. As my ad was not against their published terms and conditions it is theft, pure and simple. The thing that gets my goat is that I presume their stance against working girls is because they believe us to be "immoral". Which is a fair position to adopt, if payment is not involved. However how is it right to be able to steal my money purely because I legally work as an escort? Stealing money is wrong.... I don't do that, but they did it.

Could you try getting your money back via your bank or credit card for service not provided?
