Hi

I have just had the nightmare situation where friends and neighbours have found out about escorting. Now (last night and today) been informed by an anonymous person that the story is going to go to the papers.

Any advice on how to handle this please. As far as I am aware my children and parents/ family do not know yet.

I am worried sick

Blackmailers are of enormous interest to the police. Even if escorting were illegal, which it isn't, they would treat blackmail more seriously. Pass all communications from Anon onto the police. If Anon is giving you a way to contact them, tell them this is happening.

Most newspapers would go 'So what?' if told someone was an escort. The exceptions can be for the already famous and their relatives. If that's not the case, you have probably nothing to worry about there, but if friends and neighbours know then at some point, it's quite possible it will be known by your family. Now's the time to consider if and how to come out to them.

So sorry to hear this. I had someone try and blackmail me before and I told him to go for it. I will never be blackmailed and what XW5 says, the police will be very interested in someone blackmailing. I think it depends where you live as to whether the local paper would be interested. In London of course it would be laughed at, but a small village out in the sticks may find it front page news! (I was raised in Lincolnshire and we even had a story on the front page of two rabbits being run over!) Not sure I'd come clean to family and friends yet, could always wait and see and if the worst happens DENY DENY DENY!

Hmmmmm

Just being reading the emails again from him, pity it hadn't been text messages. I am (hopeful) of the opinion its a threat. As in - not actually going to do it. They start off pleasant and then becomes more sinister, I maybe divulged a bit too much information (lesson learned) but at least I didnt say the street and so on.

Firstly this guy is NOT a photo journalist. He would never send these type of emails as he would never get work again. You have the emails now go to the police as they should be able to trace him from his IP address. He does not sound astute enough to use a proxy server. Blackmail is a serious offence and you will find the police are very helpful.

This person is not a journalist - that's not how they work.

If and when they make contact they will always introduce themselves by name and the paper they
work for.

In general if they ARE going to run a story on you, they will contact you and ask you for any comments
you may wish to make. They are never rude, well - not to that extent anyway.

I take it you're based in Scotland ? So am I, if you need someone to headbang with frustration please get
in touch. I know how terribly frightening an experience it is to have such threats come your way.

If it was me, I would call their bluff and email them back -

"Thank you for your very erudite email. Kindly furnish me with the name of the publication you work for
and your Editor, so that I may begin the formal complaints process prior to litigation".

I would probably also remind them about the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 and let them know
that you have saved a copy of all of their emails, printed off with headers.

That will shut them up.

This sounds to me like jealous competition or quite simply, some saddo sitting in his bedsit who hates prossies.
They do exist.

My advice ? Ignore it, nothing irritates a bully more.

I think all of the others above are completely right, particularly the bit I've quoted above! I've heard of creepy little weirdos turning nasty at prossies LOADS of times; they start off wanting an appointment sometimes but their self-esteem is so low and their social skills so non-existent that if you turn 'em down due to being busy/getting bad vibes from them etc, they suddenly turn around yelling all the bad names under the sun. Bit like a toddler would if you didn't give them sweets in the supermarket queue, for example.

As others have said: his behaviour is both despicable and illegal, while yours is neither.

Print off all his emails, get in touch with the police or take up LauraLee's offer of support, and generally proceed to drive this loser insane by ignoring him.

It's absolutely tragic some of the things that pathetic nutters try to do with their time, but presumably if looking in the mirror makes you realise you're a total waste of space on this planet, it probably does drive you to do odd things. Remember that you're far better than this person and that you have the upper hand here!

I don't know. My best friend lives over the road from me and sent me an email about the topic from her work!
She said that she had known for 2 weeks (this is 3 weeks ago) and didnt know what to do. I found out what she was talking about first! Just to make sure.....

Anyway it was about the escorting world, I didnt say too much about it, apart from a 'moment' when she said she had seen all the photos (!) About the only time I felt a bit amused.

I'm married and my hubby is very practical and said that well, if everyone has known for 2 weeks has anyone been any different, and so far the answer is no.

BUT ..... I still havent seen my BF for probably about 2 months now so I guess I know what her answer is.....

Thanks for your comments and yes an opportunity to get in touch would be great, still finding my way around this website. I was feeling very lonely and isolated and so this has been a godsend.
I am hoping this is a saddo and not someone who is going to keep up with their threats. Not long ago I got threatened with a guy (texting) when I refused to see him, he said he had aids and was going to bide his time and then when he was with me rip the condom so I would catch it from him.... 'it was no less than I deserved'

Actually, I am wondering if its the same person, same style of threats as far as I can remember,
hope you are having more luck than me.

You don't need to feel lonely or isolated, ever - and that's what these morons count on, that you'll be too
scared to contact anyone for help in case they find out what you do.

I wouldn't say I'm having more luck than you in the "attracting freaks" department, we all get them, it's
just with a bit of experience and more importantly, with a network of ladies around you, in time you
learn to realise that this is a probably a man with no friends, no social skills and a penchant for train
spotting whilst spending his evenings sniffing the used thongs he has acquired from Adultwork.

Armchair warriors are all they are, PLEASE ignore them, the very worst you can do is enter into a
dialogue, especially with a threatening texter because that's exactly what they want.

I had exactly the same situation. I was dating a guy last year, who found out I was escorting. He told me to pay him ?700 a month and shag him once a week, or he'd go to the papers and 'ruin my life.' At first, I panicked and was really upset. I spoke to a friend who encouraged me to ignore him, and I did. He sent me constant abusive texts for months, saying he was coming round my house to kill me, blah blah. I told him I was going to the police, and he backed off completely. The police take blackmail very seriously, and you should go to them. I would have gone myself if my blackmailer hadn't stopped contact. I changed my number, which also helped

I understand how frightening it is, but you need to be strong and just call his bluff. The press wouldn't care if you were an escort; there are thousands of working girls in the UK. He is probably looking for a reaction and attention-seeking. There are some very pathetic people out there
