At home STI kits -does anyone else do them?
« on: 09 November 2018, 10:01:21 am »
I can't go to the local clinic - my daughters friend works there so I just wouldn't feel comfortable . I've taken to doing At Home checks because if I have to travel - well by the time I've factored in travel costs plus loss of a half day or days earnings- it hits my pocket quite hard. So At Home screening all things considered works out cheaper. I checked with the Terrance Higgins Trust and they told me the tests are reliable. I'm just curious to know if anyone else does them

Would that not skip the blood tests though?
If we're not supposed to have midnight snacks, why is there a light in the fridge?

Home kits take blood from finger pricks.

I prefer this. Dont want to chat to anyone at a clinic.
I use superdrug online. All tests are sent off to proper lab and then results online a few days later.

FLASH provide free at home HIV kits to all UK based sex workers who are or identify as female, the test is run there and then sampling really easy much easier than those you send off.

Details are in the sex work project section of the forum.

I'm interested in this.

Which tests can you do and how much are they?

My clinic provide them by post now. I can only go to the clinic if I have symptoms (although they have told me to lie as they enjoy chatting to me so I guess they will miss the interaction!)

The blood test is a finger prick test.

I think the home tests are great (and Monica's HIV one mentioned above is really easy, although terrifying :D) but I still try to get along to a clinic a couple of times a year even though I don't offer any unprotected services and don't really need to go any more often than that anyway unless there's been some 'event'. It isn't just the swabs, it's the visual checks (inside and out) to make sure everything is as it should be and I like that they can pass up to date information on if they've been seeing a lot of cases of something.

Superdrug's online doctor service is top notch though. I've bought my contraceptive pills from there for years and they do all sorts of other stuff :).

Thank goodness for this, just realised oral swabs weren't taken from me this morning at my GUM appointment. Have phoned them and now on my way back, knew there was something missing - result of too much chatting in the consultation room. Too much going on they should actually know I have them everytime, been going every 3 months for over ten years.

The finger pricks are no bother to me as I'm a diabetic, but I don't think I could do my own throat swab, as I gag horribly! I was slightly concerned when I went to Preston GUM (in civvy mode) for a regular screen recently and the nurse said they didn't routinely do throat swabs on heterosexual women as they considered the risk to be very low.

I agree that it's best to go to a clinic once or twice a year (even though many you swab your own vagina now, so nobody gives you a check). Even better go to a sex worker friendly one and make it known you're an escort.

My NW local authority have the same policy but do them for me on the basis of sex work.

I did finger pricks for an online private thyroid test last year, ended up using all the lancets and got into a sticky bloody mess. That test required a significant amount, whereas the FLASH rapid HIV kit works on a tiny amount which it sucks up itself by capillary action.

Yes, it's not always easy. Making sure your hands are as warm as possible helps, and sometimes your little finger can be most cooperative. Don't use your thumbs as they tend to have thicker skin.

Was so helpful when the home test kits came about. I used them alongside my 6-8 monthly GUM Clinic checks. I still use them now.

When I was working full time I was and still continue to be scruplously clean, careful and cautious. Using the kits just helped give me extra piece of mind.
