Hi everyone,

Today I had a client who had booked for 1h and when he arrived, he told me he was a bit in a rush and that actually he would like to stay for 30min only instead of 1h.

As he was about to give me my 30min fee, I told him that I had arranged my schedule to accommodate his booking (and also had declined some other bookings to see him), so I asked him to give me the full fee for 1h (initially planned). He accepted without a problem. However after thinking about it afterwards I thought that I maybe shouldn't have done that and be a bit more tolerant (since it rarely happens).

What do you usually do in that case ?

If you take a train and change your mind in the middle of the way, ask for a return. Sometimes it happens, use to agree, depends on how busy I m.

To be honest, not to sound bad, it would depend on who it was asking; how poor I currently was, and how he asked.
But I'd probably charge the full fee, I've gone right mercenary  ;D

On the two occasions this has happened with me in over 13 years I have accepted the smaller fee but made damn sure they didn't get a second more than the 30 minutes.

For myself it depends.  If its a new client he will be charged.  If its a regular whos never pushing his luck I would be OK.

I tend to stick this type of client in with the early arrivers trying to get free extra time.

Depends on the exact circumstances, have I set things aside, does it mean I have more admin, have I missed out.

Also when I did this with a few new clients it was abused, one turned out to rob me at knife point, another two were PITA/rude when making subsequent enquiries.

I'd have gone with the lower fee, with the gamble that he may become a regular,  the repeat booking potential for me is worth more than the difference between an hour and a 30 min fee.

I don't want regulars who take the piss in this way. If they let me know in good time before they've arrived (so I have a chance to fill the time) that's fine, but once they're through the door then they're paying for the time they booked or they can leave.

If I booked my personal trainer for an hour at 6pm and then decided to leave at 6.30 or 6.45, I would still have to pay for that hour and rightly so. People have arranged their day around me and they're not responsible for my plans changing, so why do they (we) deserve to lose money?

I agree with Amy, time set aside is time that must be paid for. I think it's important to expect respect and insist on it. Give people an inch and they'll take the proverbial!

Yep agree with Amy these are not the type of people i would want back. I judge them as a pisstaker so would not be interested in having them back as what what more piss taking woulf they do.

I usually want the full fee and do get annoyed if they try to change it to less time. Only happened 2 or 3 times and if i can't get the full fee due after having a dig to them about messing with income then they get a very basic service indeed and to be honest what do they expect really?

None of the new clients I offered money back for reduced time ever went on to become regulars.

Also chopping and changing timings I find tiring and annoying - as if I'm a puppet on a piece of string. An advance booked did this many times, not in the booking but ahead always claiming it was to make things better for me.

Anyway with in session it's the time they have booked. Occasionally with a regular (and my regs tend to stick with booked time) I may if it makes my day easier give back a proportion, but to be fair most regulars do not reduce the booked time and if they do they tell me to keep the money (still gave some back even when someone said this because it did suit me and I knew he'd rebook anyway).

This has happened to me once and I told him he could either stay the full hour or leave. He stayed.
If anyone walked in after having booked an hour and then asking for half I would do the same, ask him for the full fee or tell him to leave.
It would really get my back up and I’d rather lose the booking.
These men are time wasters in my opinion.
I work strictly by appointment and would likely have turned someone else down.
I’m fact, depending on my mood, how busy I’d been etc I might tell them just to leave anyway as they certainly wouldn’t get my best service.

Which is the polar opposite to my experience,  almost everyone I've done this with has gone on to book further sessions with no problem and no chopping and changing.

I find if I occasionally give a little grace for the curve balls life throws at us it is beneficial in many ways, which just goes to prove there are as many ways to work as there are people working.
