Amazon gift certificates no longer anonymous to send
« on: 06 December 2015, 05:10:37 pm »
As far as I know, they're still anonymous to receive for things like deposits - all the sender needs is your email address - but Amazon have just changed things so that when they're redeemed* the recipient is invited to 'Send a thank you message to (what Amazon thinks they're called)'.

Argh.

* i.e. a string of letters and digits are entered.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

If you don't send the thank you they're still anonymous right. I've seen this crop up a few time when I have redeemed mine and I never send the thank you.

It's a recent change.

If you send me one, I now get to see what Amazon thinks your name is, regardless of whether or not I send a thank you via Amazon. Before, there wasn't a name and I don't think you got to see an email address either.

I've seen the thank you note, not clue where tthe suggested name comes from, given that I'm outcall and usually see a utility bill, phonebook entry or hotel reservation it's not really an issue. I have refunded by Amazon, if someone wants to somehow use that, that's up to them. How do they know it's real?

I sent you one a couple of days ago and I don't care if you know my real name. But I can see why other people who use Amazon for these things would be alarmed.

Oh wait so the person receiving views the name.

E.G. Mark sent you a amazon gift card say thank you.

They still dont see my name if I receive it? Sorry I'm a little slow tonight.

No they don't see your name, and the only name I've seen has been a first name which iI assumed was lifted from the email address, or at least that's the impression I get.

Yes, the receiver will be invited to 'Send a thank you message to Mark E. Smith' or whatever full name Amazon has for the sender.

The sender just knows the email address they sent it to.

I've noticed this too.

I have an amazon account for my work name and one for my real name.  Just create another account.  You can use the same addresses and even replicate your card details with no problems.

It takes a few minutes to create another account.  Keep them separate.

I've had a question for a while and I'm sorry if it's stupid, but I've held off asking for vouchers because I only have an account in my real name. I have sent vouchers which I assume to be anonymous but the person in question I don't care if they saw my real name.

I obviously have a working name and a works email, but if a client to send vouchers to my working email I'm guessing that I wouldn't be able to use them as I haven't got an account with Amazon in my working name.

I thought when you create an account with Amazon you have to give them your card details, so how you get round that when you use a fake name???

Sorry, I know that sounds stupid!  ??? I can't give them my work details and match those up with a card, surely?

Thats strange I have been using them for ages and my guys have confirmed for me that my name does not appear when the voucher is redeemed. Also, you can get your client to pick up ?25 & ?50 vouchers in Sainsburys like top up cards and get them to send you the code, certainly no tracing you that way.

Ah, fantastic! That might be a way round my problem then :)

I'm pretty certain you can use a voucher code from Amazon on any account you'd like - so the client could send the voucher to themselves and then just text you the code, but I don't know if that would get around the problem highlighted above with finding out the name of the sender.

As far as I'm aware recipient's name is not revealed. Mine come to my work email I redeem on personal aaccount and do not send the amazon thank  you card. I only ever acknowledge receipt by email.

As a receiver, they've never seen what Amazon thinks your name is.

As a sender, they've only just changed this.

It is possible but unlikely that they'll change the former, not least because the string of letters and digits can be applied to any Amazon account by its owner.
