Am I breaking the law?
« on: 15 November 2011, 03:12:37 pm »
Hi, I'm 24 years old and have been escorting totally independently for 3 years.
I live with my fiance who has a career and I claim no benefits or anything.
When I work I rent self catering apartments/hotels or I use the house of a trusted client, paying him a fee. I am considering using my new home in England/Wales for some incalls as I used to do back home in N.I. My house is privately rented.
I don't do any part time work or pay National Insurance etc, nor do I have a bank account. I had a bank account my whole life untill years ago when topping up my 02 phone with my debit card they mistakenly lifted an extra 1p which wasn't in my account and so every week Ulster Bank would send me letters for ?30. They would rectify this every week when I went in untill I moved house and could no longer go in and try and sort it so years later they still send letters to my mums house for me and I am now like ?600 in debt to them.
I am setting up a bank acc with HSBS on Friday, will they know about my previous acc even though I have moved house like 4 times and countries and been married.
What will I do with my earnings from my escorting? Will they question me on where the money is coming from?
I was robbed a few weeks back but didn't report it as I don't know where I stand legally with my job.
Please advise me girls. Thanks, Natalie Xx

Working as a prostitute is perfectly legal, and if you are robbed or attacked you have the same rights as anybody else (as you would if it wasn't - nobody has to feel they can't report violence or abuse against them).

If (as it sounds) you're not registered as self employed and declaring your earnings, then yes you are breaking the law, by evading tax and National Insurance - to be honest, I find it incredible that you wouldn't know that so I apologise if I've misunderstood your post. The penalties can be high, but if you get registered and have kept proper records then you should be able to start pretty much fresh and I would recommend doing so as soon as possible before you get caught, as it'll be a lot worse then.

There is a recent relevant thread here.

That's why I posted the link :). It should all get a lot clearer from the stuff on there, but the best way by a country mile is to just ring the helpline and tell them you want to register. They're really helpful on everything.
