Is Aldgate/Algate east a good area?
« on: 16 November 2022, 10:18:52 pm »
My apartment hunting is proving to be a nightmare, the rental market has gone bonkers and London is facing a post pandemic never seen before influx of people. It's never been so difficult to secure a property EVER. Everyone and their mother seems to be looking for an apartment so rates have sky rocketed like never before. My question is: Is Aldgate/Aldgate East a good location or it's too far east?

Thanks all!

Ana

Aldgate/Aldgate East are in East London on the fringes of the City - did you mean too far east? ???

Paddington is too far west for me to even consider but somebody will know (and sympathies too - I'm waiting to find out how much my rent is going to go up when I renew in the knowledge that I'm going to have to suck it up whatever it is because I'll never get anything else as good).

Yes, I meant too Far East? maybe I'm wrong? I've never worked so Far East, but then paddington is too far west. I just wanted to know if the Aldgate area is a busy one? Liverpool station is much bigger than Paddington st ... so should be busier?

Yes its a busy area if you are on the Liverpool St side. Stay away from Whitechapel though! X

I actually did ok further east in Whitechapel and even Stepney Green. Albeit the hotel in Whitechapel did not throw me out but did not allow me to check in on the day l returned.
I'm glad I got all the Cynthia Payne books before the prices rocked to sky high.

Did they give you any reason for that? Out of curiosity sorry. ???

Take it to PM folks please - it's not fair to derail the OP's thread and none of this answers her question :)

Depends on the market / clientele that you are looking to attract.  I personally do not like the area, but it does fringe the City and it is in an area that can attract some deep pocketed clients.  However, it doesn't feel safe walking around at night and the men are quite leery around some of the corners (my personal experience).

I do know that rents in the area are still okay-ish and I guess you can maximise profits if you find the right property to work from; transport is also good since Elizabeth Line is now open to connect more stations to the area.  Hope it works out for you, whatever your decision.

The OP is not 'touring' and she's talking about Aldgate/Aldgate East, not Liverpool Street. There's a big difference with both.

it doesn't feel safe walking around at night and the men are quite leery around some of the corners (my personal experience).

I used to work over that way quite regularly and I often walk home through it now if I've been to the cinema or the big Sainsbury's at Whitechapel, and I've never felt unsafe? Maybe that's because I'm old and angry :D
