How easy is it to raise your rates
« on: 27 April 2011, 12:40:33 pm »
once you have set them?    Say you start out at 150/hr and then realise your getting fantastic feedback and/or too many guys responding to handle ( wouldnt that be brilliant).  How much do you readjust your rate by?  10/20 pounds?  50?
Do guys ever say, wow you should raise your rates?
Do you grandfather in your old clients at your old rate or do you just say sorry everyone is now gonna pay my new higher rate?

?50 is a big hike, and I would be surprised if you didn't lose a significant number of clients as a result.

As far as grandfathering, one big question is would you feel at all resentful at someone who is paying 150 rather than 160 or 170 or whatever? If so, even if you have limited it to people you really want to see, don't do it.

When I started out I was drastically under priced (did no research and was charging ?50 an hour and offering quickies from ?20). I quickly (within a couple of days, once I found out I was supposed to be paying tax) raised all my rates by ?10, and then after about 2 months raised them again to ?100 an hour, ?60 half and ?40 quickie where they stayed for a year. I've recently stopped offering hour+ bookings and am specialising in quickies (and also stopped offering anal) , so I dropped my rates by ?10 again to sweeten the disappointment a bit :P

I will say that I was generally earning MUCH better money when I was charging ?60 an hour, but I had to really work for it! I could have filled my appointment slots 4x over if I'd wanted to and I often couldn't even find time to answer lots of my emails. Obviously you're starting at a higher rate but I imagine it's the same - the more you charge the less interest you'll have but the easier it is to earn a good amount without wearing yourself out. And if you find you're not quite making as much money as you want, you can always do sales and stuff every now and again which attracts new clients that can become regulars and guarantees you a busy week.

I started out at ?100, then ?110. Once I got noticed I had more clients than I could handle, with several getting quite cross when I repeatedly couldn't see them at short notice. I still generally don't/can't see clients at very short notice but I'm not getting as much stress with phone.  Anyway a client suggested I raise my rates, I was very nervous but there was already another girl in my area charging ?130 so I didn't see why I couldn't either. Especially since we appeared to be offering a similar service too. I had to hold my breath for a bit, but it didn't do any damage and my regulars kept coming back. One or two did ask to be kept on lower rates for 1 hour + bookings but the thing was at the time my rates for longer bookings already did include quite hefty discounts on subsequent hours. So eventually I did bring everyone up to speed.

Yes having special offers can bring in new clients, but some will hold on for your next sale - just as customers often do in the high street!

I've increased my rates in the past, only by ?10, but it was easy, it didn't have any effect on bookings.  And I told the old clients that I had upped my rates and everyone pays the same rate.  So much easier that way.

The other way I have seen girls increase their rates by a lot is when they take an extended break (telling clients that they have retired) then coming back at the higher rate.  I have no idea if they have had more/less bookings.

Only problem with hiking prices up are clients that have already seen you at ?150 aren't going to start automatically paying ?160, ?170 or ?200 maybe you are getting so many calls because you fit into their price bracket. Most punters I know have a limit and stick to it they would also probably consider a girl to be taking the mick if she bumped up prices especially if they had to be lowered again as no one was calling they wont come back.  I do not see why someone charging the amount we do would be bothered for an extra tenner an hour ?150 is more than you get paid in any everyday job and men know this so for an extra ?10/?20 etc I would just stick to lots of ?150's than half the amount of ?160's for example.

When I first started, I  charged ?150ph and being "new" I had loads of work I still have a couple of regulars from that time, most if not all, were full GFE even if they only lasted 3 minutes  ;D

But last summer was pretty dead  and those calling pestered me for half hours which I don't really like doing, I dropped to ?120ph.  it helped but not a lot and still got some wanting half hours for ?60  >:(

I stopped working for heath reasons from November to March, I started off again at ?150 but was getting nothing, what I found was most girls  near me  of all ages are charging from ?60 to ?120 and some doing desperate things at that price  :-X

Anyway I now charge ?100ph I do give a good service  and things have been ok, not very busy, some days nothing some days 3 or 4 but steady over each week so far (touch wood) I think if I were to try to go higher again, work would drop off.
