Advice
« on: 28 September 2017, 09:35:32 am »
I was informed a week ago by the residential company that manage the block of flats I work from that the water would be off all day yesterday.  I made sure that I had water throughout the day, so I could drink, and if anyone was happy to wash in a sink then I could see them.  The water eventually came back on about 3pm.

However, today I got up at 7.30am to find there's no water, so not only have I not got any to keep me going until it's back on ( I can pop to Tesco's for water), but I've lost a 2 hour booking as the chap wanted to use the shower as he was travelling quite a way to see me.  I explained my situation to the guy, and he said I should claim loss of earnings, but not sure how I can do this when the management company and my landlord don't know I work from this address.  This is all I need as this month has been so quiet and desperately need the money.

Any advice would be appreciated.

check your contract...sometimes you are not allowed to work from your flat.

Regarding my contract, this is why they don't know I work from this address. That's why I'm asking if there is a way I can be compensated without drawing attention to myself.

I'm no expert but I would have thought that there is no way to obtain compensation when you are not 'officially working there' without drawing attention to yourself.

Unfortunately.

Just been in touch with CAB, and I'm only entitled to ?20 if the water has been off for 12 hours or more regardless of whether I work ther or not.  ?20 effing quid.  Like that's going to make up for my losses.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Unlikely - I mean you won't get the amount of a 2 hr booking
You can claim but from what it it says below you will get ?20 max maybe ?40 if they haven't paid you within a month .

The block where my flat is  had a leak which resulted in really really low pressure which meant the shower would not heat up and you could only get cold water back in the summer

Several of us in the block replaced the actual shower units thinking that was the problem 😂 Only to find out that nothing had changed
It cost me Over ?500 for a new shower unit plumber & new tiles plus at least a a min of a grand a week in lost bookings as I couldn't work without a shower

I was without a shower for over a month,  others about 2 months because it was a stand off between the water board and the council who still maintain the block even for the ones like me that own the flat .
In the end I got the water board to do a emergency check by telling a few white lies  and got the job  number to give to the council .

It turned out that The leak was the councils problem and the water board did fine them several thousand pounds  because of their stupidity and because they didn't get fixed within the required 7 days

But none of us got and refund to be honest I didn't even think about asking for it just put down to one of those shit happens things

Whether renting or owning a property most if not all leases/agreements will include a clause which forbids using the place for immoral purposes and our job is contained within that.  Rules get broken every minute of every day though and if we all adhered to what is in our leases we would be out of business in no time.

Compensation? I doubt it. Just take it on the chin and get back in the saddle as soon as is possible.

Shit.  If I'd had that kind of hassle then I definitely would fight for compo.  Councils think they're a law unto themselves.

Water finally came back on around 1pm, and luckily for me my 1pm was able to shift things around and travel down to see me for 3pm, so all was not lost in the end.  Just couldn't afford another day off without water like yesterday.

Glad everything got sorted, bloody council are useless at the best of times.

For me If the water goes off or something unexpected happens to your usual place maybe just work from a hotel for a few days. I'm in just a room at the moment so would be impossible to work from. I guess everyone's standards are different but I usually work from a branded but cheaper hotel and always make up for the room and then some. I'd see it as an opportunity to maybe branch out and go somewhere different, I know it's not always that simple but I've had loads of problems that have come my way and I've managed to still get on with everything. you never know you might find a reg you wouldn't of had otherwise that will visit you whatever happens (has happened to me, I have quite a few accidental clients so to speak!).
