Advertising w.o the internet
« on: 22 August 2016, 08:10:30 pm »
I am constantly looking for different ways to advertise. Before moving to the islands, I used to advertise in the phone books and the newspapers but now I live somewhere way smaller and am catering to tourists/people on vacation so I don't feel like that would work.

My friend came up with the idea of making business cards and handing them to men in tourist districts. I felt that would make me too high profile. Does anyone else advertise outside of the internet? Any tips?

Advertising without the internet here in the UK would mean printed media - newspapers,  magazines and so on. Handing out cards in public would be soliciting and illegal, so I'd be amazed if it wasn't wherever you are.

I don't think it would work anyhow - it seems a lot of trouble to go to when most will just be thrown away. You'd also have to think how you would distribute these cards - are you going to actually physically hand them to men you think look as if they might pay a prostitute? If so I'd be prepared for some abuse, too.

The other classic would be 'carding' - leaving postcard sized ads in places like pay phones. Depending on the culture, there's paid-for ads in shop windows.

Where do tourists look?
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

If you're near any big hotels, perhaps befriend the doormen/male receptionists?

I think that could work depending on the sort of tourist destination it is.

If it's somewhere with a lot of 'all-inclusive resort' wristband type places, the chances of anybody local being able to just wander in will be zero - I went to one years ago, and even getting out to have a look round the town was difficult enough. If I remember rightly they had armed guards.
