Advanced bookings.... discuss

Ok, so the phone is ringing quite a lot now which is a good thing but they are all for next week (and 2 for the 20th/21st)

Now i know that lots of you will say that advanced bookings dont usually amount to anything  but mine sort of make sense to me so i just thought id get your opinion on this subject (but dont worry, im not counting them as booked and definate till the time comes, i havent gone gaga)

The reason they make sense to me is because they are outcalls to hotels in Devon so these guys have been told by their companies that they will be working here on particular dates next week or week after so thought they would check my avilability for said dates.  Obviously i have asked for a call the day or so before to confirm the booking is still on and said that if i dont hear from them i will assume they no longer want my services.  They are happy with this and i have also suggested that they send me an email with details of their requirements after our calls so that they can give me details of what they desire (i love that i get asked for specific clothing to arrive in, thats fun!).

I am taking these enquiries with a pinch of salt but what are your experiances with business men visiting the areas you work in?  Do they sometimes think ahead or do they just call the day before or a few hours before and hope for the best??

I would say re the above where hotels have been booked etc, about 3/4 come off, plans change when gents get down here, cant get away, never make it, meetings over run, they find the hotel is too small to entertain or are in some cases just knackerd when they realise they underestimated the journey by several hours  ;)

Then of course there are the oppertunists that find themselves in your area and have your number stored on the off chance, so bit of a mixed bag really

Ah, I didn't say that advanced bookings didn't amount to anything, I said never count anything as definite until the booking's over and you have the money in your hand. That rule can count for same day bookings, bookings taken for tomorrow or for next month.
A lot of bookings taken in advance go ahead with no problems. Some do have problems in that the client is running late, the dates have been changed, or they just plain cancel.
It is nice to see your calender fill up with bookings, but as I say, I don't count them, or any other, as definite until the money's in my hand.

yup, of 4 booking requests I had yesterday only 2 confirmed a booking, one was my one today which went great and I've one for next week which I think is genuine but will not consider done and dusted until well..done and dusted!

I wish I could take deposits for longer or advanced bookings!
