Moonfruit and making your own website
« on: 23 January 2009, 08:56:16 pm »
Quick question, for those who used moonfruit to create their website how has it worked for you? Im going to began to set mine up next week, under my own domain. Does anyone have any additional advice I could use? I read thread after thread relating to it so far, but if you have any other thing I should look out for let me know.

Also, how many of you have made your website from scratch, with no professional help? I've seen some really good ones here so far and cant help but wonder if it was self-created or professionally done.

Hi Joey

I did my own using Trellian software (free to download) to build and upload, and picassa (free from google) to edit my pictures. It's not the slickest site I know but it works for me and I have complete control over it. It cost me ?70 in total including 2 years' of hosting and the url.

Hope that helps, I found it easy and quick to do and simple to maintain. PM me if you or anyone else wants technical info.

I did mine using moonfruit and virtually not having a clue what I was doing, prior to this I have only ever used word, excel spreadsheets and email. I pay ?2.99 a month the basic package to maintain my site.

Violette's site is also a moonfruit site, but i think she has the premium package which gives you a lot more options and more tools to do fancy things.

Yea Violette's site is really nice. I was just hoping I could have a professional look to it from moonfruit, and it looks like I can. Im going to look at the site Lilly also and see how it works. but last night I stayed up til 3 am reading all about moonfruit so I'm really considering it.

Thanks for the 'push'. I am going to do it. I have to take what Brandy said to heart, not having the website may be making people take me less seriously. I'm going to give myself a week to 'meditate' on some ideas and then spend an entire day working on it. So I have to wake up early and go to bed late. Be prepared for numerous PM's if I have any trouble, but I'll try to do it based on the tutorials

You're still fretting :) It is really not hard at all- Moonfruit is remarkably easy and you can alter as you go. It has a 14 day trial period before you pay btw so just get stuck in and if it doesn't go well no loss xx And yeah, Violette has a wicked site.

Just start doing it, you dont have to make it go live till your ready.  Cas, didnt you work on yours for about a month before you went live?

I promise, once you start on it, it will become addictive and you will enjoy it.  You get a much better feel for it as you go along and you can change it as and when you need to.  Just remember most importantly, KEEP IT ORIGINAL.  people dont want to see the same old thing time and time again so take inspiration from others sites but then truely make it your own.

Yep, can't remember how to do it, but you can change settings so only you can see it, it tells you somewhere how to do it on the site. You can also hide individual pages when you want to change or work on them before you add them.

Just have a go! No-one needs to see it if it's rubbish and you will learn some useful stuff - you might even enjoy yourself :D.

Im going to have a go at changing mine tomorrow and doing a moonfruit one.  Ive not really ever been happy about mine to be honest.  I think i might get a friend to take some picks too.  she has a great flat for that kind of thing so might take advantage of it this week.

I can set the site up to go to my lexienight domain cant i?  i dont need a new one of those?

no, you can just transfer it. I can let you know how I would need to go back over it. Actually, click on 'domain' on the moonfruit website and it'll show you but anyway...girl I am having a blast with this webpage thing and its 4 am  :D. In fact Im having more fun than if I had gone out tonight. The good thing about making the website is the building is perpetual...this will keep me entertained on those boring nights! And no its not ready yet, Im still laying bricks!
