50 pound notes
« on: 29 March 2019, 07:33:14 pm »
Do you accept 50 pound notes?
I’ve just had a client give me 3(!) in one go and I was very wary as to take them or not.
Do you think it would be unreasonable of me to add to my profile that I dont accept 50 pound notes ?
At the moment I have no pen or light to check, stupid of me I know, where do you get yours from? Are they always reliable?
Thanks xx

I've only ever had a few, but they've all been fine. I pay them into the bank or BS ASAP.

I get them quite often , I've never had any issue , but for some reason I mostly spend them rather than pay them into my account ...

lol ;D

I haven't had a fake £50 so far and I get them often. I just looked and the Bank of England website has a nice guide, it tells you what UV light to buy. Got mine from Maplins when it existed.... but didn't use it.

Indeed. But since you're far more likely to be given duff tens and twenties than fifties (and like other posters I've had plenty of £50 notes over the years and never a bad one) I'd be checking those a lot more carefully :)

Thanks for the replies. For some reason I’ve always thought it easier to get ahold of fake 50s than the others. Definitely reassured since you’ve all never come across any.
I was initially unsure bc he seemed like a odd/maybe dodgy guy, shouldn’t have judged bc he was lovely tbh.
Thanks again!! I’ll hold off on not accepting 50s for now then haha x x

Yes I've had loads of 50's over the years and never had a problem with them

The one time I did have a fake note it was a £20. Have used a uv light/alarm since that incident! Bought it from Amazon or Ebay and like that's a 2 in 1 alarm/uv light!

I've had a few and most shops round here won't accept them. Went into the bank to change it up and mentioned about shops not accepting them. She said that it's silly as they are the least forged notes. I think here it more to do with shops not having the change if you only spend a little amount of it.

Fifty notes are OK but I tend to either get banked or I need change it up on many occasions instead
I tend to check them first..

My friend got me a note checker from eBay. Proper shop type one but only £7.
I have it on the side and either check the notes in front of clients, or discreetly when they're in the shower.
No dodgys yet.

I don't think a client has brought me any 50 notes for well over a year. Are they being phased out? I don't even know if the ATM's issue them.  Will check next time I pass one.

No, they're not being phased out - the new polymer version has already been announced for after they do the new twenties next year. I don't get them often when I'm at home but in London they're fairly everyday in my experience, and I quite like them as they don't take up as much space on the way to the bank.

Plus as other posters have said, they're less likely to be fake :)

I get them in London all the time. My bank gave me a pen to check notes with it’s so simple to run the pen over when they are in the shower.
