118 phone directory
« on: 15 July 2009, 08:22:33 am »
I have looked through the recent posts and can't find anybody posting about this already - apologies if it's been covered.

I got an email from a client last week about this new directory 118 has got, where anybody can put in your address and find a mobile phone number for you.
I first thought - that's not good. Not for us that work from home as the mail was unclear about giving in a name with the address. Imagine a client gets your real name from this? Your kids names if they have mobiles?
I went to the site but it's crashed.
Did anybody see the news last night about this? Apparently it crashed under the weight of people emailing them saying get me off this directory.
Aside from the implications for us, the privacy issue for us, how easy is this going to make it for the dregs of society to get hold of our kids mobile numbers? This was apparently one reason many went onto the site to demand all numbers at their address be taken off - the issue of gaining a kid's trust via text messages and then what?

According to the news last night, they are still planning to do this, they are 'updating their site.'
Once it's up, I am planning on making all mobile numbers at my address ex directory. Not just for the sake of my children but for my sake. Imagine your personal phone starts going one afternoon as your work one is off for whatever reason and it's a client asking to see you as he can't get you on the other phone? And then he knows your name as well?
I think you have to put a name into it as well as the address but am not sure, anyhow, I don't want our numbers on here at all.
God, I mean, the sheer amount of people I would rather NOT hear from that could suddenly call up.

People are reporting on this as if you can get anyone's phone number unless they opt out. The service is actually massively restrictive, and won't give you anyone's number.

Now for a start, they don't just need to know your address, they also need to know your name, just like with regular directory enquiries. Unless you associate your personal number with your working name, or they already know your real name, they can't access that record.

The bit that's different is that they never actually give out the number of anyone who's being looked up. Someone can call you indirectly via 118, or they send you a text with contact details of the person who looked you up, saying they'd like you to call them.

Oh, I see. Interesting.
Might have known all that if I could actually have got on their site.

The information part of the site is here, although I don't know when the ex-directory requests will be caught up. I had both of my numbers removed last month when I first found out about it on another board. Apparently the name and address information they have got is woefully out of date for a lot of people, and has been mostly collected from forms filled in online and so on - if nothing else it should remind everyone to be careful what we do with personal information in the future.

I wouldn't worry too much - just send the removal request and they'll get to it; I don't think enough people will be using it for it to matter yet, and they are not giving out names or addresses. I'll be interested to see if spam texts and so on increase by much once it's up and running - they state that they will not be selling details on but I have my doubts.

The first article I saw on the subject was quite clear on how it worked, without any of the panicky nonsense. Obviously I got lucky there!
