I don't have a fatalistic attitude but a realistic one.

I know I have not been doing this long, but I have yet to get a real landline number. I guess 75% are mobile numbers, the rest are with held. On the withheld ones when I ask for a number I either get given a wrong number or another mobile.

You may think so, and that may be your experience but it doesn't match any reality I can relate to and that's after almost twelve years working. Of course somebody determined to hurt you will, but that doesn't mean it's pointless trying to make it as difficult, inconvenient and unattractive a prospect as possible for them to do so - the less easy target you make yourself, the more likely they are not to bother with you and move on to somebody who doesn't bother taking any proper precautions to protect themselves.

As for not getting a landline number, your other post says that most of your bookings take place in hotels where the number is available to all, so I don't understand - you just ring and have yourself put through to the room? Either way, if somebody doesn't have any proof that they're at the address they're claiming to be then the easiest thing to do is just refuse the booking and take one from somebody who does. And answering withhelds is pretty much the road to madness (as you've found already, by the sound of things).

But they tend to be booked via mobiles. It is true I can ring the hotel I guess but anyone can give a random name when booking in.

I guess maybe I should be doing that.

Yes they can give a random name however it's a bit more difficult to be in a room without having a booking for that room. The whole phoning through is about asking to be put through to Mr such and such in room xx. Speaking on the room landline confirms the person who booked you is in that room.
