The East London Project – Important UK Research
« on: 30 August 2018, 01:57:34 pm »
UPDATE: SURVEY IS NOW OPEN TO SEX WORKERS WORKING ANYWHERE IN LONDON

Are you a sex worker working in London?
Would you like to take part in research about how laws and policing affect sex workers’ safety, health and access to services?

We’re a group of researchers led by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, including people with experience of sex work or working with sex workers. We’re working in collaboration with Open Doors (an NHS sex worker support service) and National Ugly Mugs to find out how removing sex work-related police enforcement could affect sex workers’ safety, health and access to services.  The results will be used to fight for laws, policies and services that protect sex workers’ safety, health and rights, across London and the UK.  You can read more about the research here: http://eastlondonproject.lshtm.ac.uk/

We are inviting sex workers to take a confidential online questionnaire who
  • Sell sex (in-person services) in London OR have sold sex in London in the past 3 months
AND
  • Are aged 18 years or older

Questionnaire available in English, Polish, Romanian and Portuguese (Brazilian).
The questionnaire is completely confidential and you do not need to give your name or contact details if you do not want to.

We will give you £20 (paypal or amazon voucher) to thank you for taking part and you can access free HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing (and we link you into treatment if necessary).

Want to take part?

You can complete the questionnaire here: https://enketo.lshtm.ac.uk/::hrZyRCyq. DM or email me for login details elp@lshtm.ac.uk or see our posts in closed sex worker forums

The questionnaire asks about your experiences with police, your safety, how your sex work is organised, contact with outreach services, your physical, mental and sexual health and housing and financial situation.

Some questions may be difficult to answer and you don’t have to answer any questions you do not want to. If you like, we can also put you in touch with organisations that provide support on safety, health and rights.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Good to see the East London Project posting on SAAFE.  The team behind this have many years experience of ethical research with sex workers in the UK and internationally and carry out practical research which can inform policy. This projects is a participatory research project and the team includes current and former sex workers.  They really understand the need for confidentiality and anonymity. Whilst the project is London focused it is a project with national significance and an important piece of research. I know they'll really value the input from SAAFE forum members who work in East London.

Hi folks,

Thanks so much to everyone who has taken part in the East London project so far! I just wanted to say thank you so much, we really appreciate your time and expertise.

We’ve had a great response since opening up the survey beyond East London to include sex workers working anywhere in London. So to give people more time to complete the survey, we’ve extended the survey deadline by a few more weeks.

So if you have provided sexual services in person in the last three months in London and are 18 years or older, we'd love to hear from you. You can take part here: https://enketo.lshtm.ac.uk/::hrZyRCyq. DM or email me for login details elp@lshtm.ac.uk or see closed sex worker forums.

For more details on the survey see the main post.

Thank you for reading this,
Jocelyn

Jocelyn, I occasionally tour London.  May I participate in your survey, then, or not?
Thanks.

From the wording, if you've done it in the past three months, yes.

It talks about working in London, not living there.
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Hi Braziliana, Thanks for your question and to xw5 for your response! As xw5 says, if you've worked in London in the last three months providing in-person sexual services, then absolutely you can take part.

We want to hear from people of all genders and nationalities, who've worked providing in-person sexual services in any way (e.g. from flats, hotels, outdoors, saunas, agencies) and who have or have not had contact with police in relation to their work.

Thanks again,
Jocelyn
