Hello, My name is Abi and Im a student studying criminology at Uni.
In two weeks I have to do a presentation on how Sex Workers deal with the stigma associated with the job.
I would really appreciate if somebody could give me some first hand feedback.
Thank you very much for reading.
Abi.

Given that sex workers are not criminals, what does the existance of stigma specific to us have to do with your supposed course topic?
I will also point out to members that this originates from a free hotmail address rather than a credible academic one, so as ever, mind how you go if you do decide to get in touch.

The module of criminology I chose to Study is Self Stigma and Spoilt Identity.
I can private message anybody with my Student email if they would prefer.
I know that what you do is not a crime I just wanted an insight from somebody real rather than having to rely on theorists and perspectives.
Sorry If I have upset anybody.

Hello ladies,
Amy - When I did mine there was a module involving the theory, practices and policy surrounding sex workers. I was quite stunned that a legal profession was heavily debated within the subject. But that is a debate within itself, so I shall shush.
OP - I suggest you provide a link to an online survey (and do it in a manner that does not make us feel that you think we are all uneducated desperadoes that have no choice, or crack whores as some of the surveys I have seen posted on here do), then some of us make take time out to assist. I'm not of course saying you would word things wrongly.
I'm afraid I am personally no use to you though as everyone I have told willingly, shows support.
Good luck x

Hi OP,
Cross posted.
I believe that explores 'deviance', types of stigma, stigma in different types of social contexts etc? It is studied along with sociology too? So whilst it is a module where you can explore in relation to sex workers, it is not associating sex workers with criminals. Would that be about right?

As suggested I have made a very short survey. There are only five questions.

Thank you very much for taking part if you manage to.

H, yes you are correct. The module I am doing is Self Stigma and spoilt identity. So it looks at how society as a whole treat people who do not necessarily conform to 'Social Norms'. We dont focus just on Sex - Workers we have also looked at non-heterosexual people, criminals, and different races and religions.
I don't do it with sociology I do it with law, law is very dry so my criminology module is my favourite.

OP - I filled the survey in. Glad to see that you can still contribute to the survey even if you have not faced stigma.
Good luck with it x
