Radio 1 student sex workers
« on: 21 April 2014, 09:24:12 pm »
I was just coming home from an outcall and put Radio 1 on, they're discussing student sex workers. I barely heard any of the show but I did hear one woman saying she was on dating sites and discovered a site where prostitutes could advertise themselves (I wonder which).. but they always say things like 'turned to prostitution' or 'I needed the money' etc. I feel those phrases/the media in general portray prostitution as a last resort for desperate women, not a legitimate non-exploitative career choice for women who want to choose their earnings, working hours, what they do and who they see.
I'm sure this has been discussed far too many times but I just wondered if anyone else heard the show? As of this autumn I will be a student so I'd like to know if the show portrayed us in a reasonable way. :)

Oh gutted I missed this!!  :( Regarding the needing the money thing tough; while not totally a last resort of desperation the money definitely is the deciding factor for me. If I could make this kind of money *by the hour* doing any kind of other work, menial or whatever, I would. The fact of the matter is as a post-graduate and high maintenance student living away from home I needed a high return for low time-input job and this was the most economical option for my life right now. The fact I have nothing against such casual sex is handy  ;D ;D

Don't be. It'll turn up on iplayer soon enough, for anybody who's lacking a bit of wet paint to keep an eye on.

Not all programmes are crap, Amy, even if most are :)

To help those looking, what programme / what time was it?
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

Very interesting section where they explain no one would talk to them, Universities wouldn't talk, calls to Escorts unanswered.

Not surprised.

When you have a job no one will admit to, for fear of it affecting their education and future employment, plus the reputation of the media to twist words and out people, no you won't get anyone talking about it.

Maybe not, but on the evidence we have so far

Radio 1

I'd say the odds were stacked against this one. I haven't listened to R1 since John Peel died, but even then I can't say it was ever my go-to station for investigative journalism.

Then again, I'm not a student :).

It's actually not bad. They just had a woman stripper say it was refreshing to take her clothes off and be paid for showing what is her body. They have also said that the options for other employment are not there. It's a flexible way to earn a good living.

My criticism of the programme is that they played down the need for safety procedures and made it all sound very twee. One woman they spoke to said you could build up trust by exchanging messages over time, and "if he has good feedback" (they were I think referring to AW at this point) "then all should go well". The one woman Escort they spoke too meets her clients in a 'public place' being the train station, and said that was the best she could do under current laws. They then spoke to rape crisis who pointed out no-one is ever completely safe. Unless she's verified the address they are going to beforehand, I don't see how meeting clients in a public place makes it any safer, and as we know many dodgy clients do infact like to meet 'in public'.

What I was also shocked at was when they visited the Terence Higgins trust and it sounded like the woman sex worker who had had sex without choice, hadn't had any previous sexual health checks. The things that were said suggested that she had never previously been tested for HIV, nor any other sexually transmitted infection. Most universities make these checks visibly available to all their students, so makes me wonder how many other sex workers are not accessing sexual health services.

I haven't seen/heard the program but an escort I follow on tumblr said that she was interviewed for it and they edited it heavily to make her seem like a victim  :FF

Ah.

One of the women said she'd been approached whilst doing street work and a man had encouraged her to have sex with him, so he could pimp her out.

The way they started it was by saying they'd asked her about rape. They then played a clip of her saying "I don't want to talk about rape". Then they played a bit of her talking about her experience with this man. She also talked about being at an outcall and the guy only offering a reduced fee, she'd given him a blow job so said they'd cut it short. He then said he was going to call the police.

To be honest I'd have said ok, I'm happy to speak to them. She seemed to think she'd be the one in trouble which is far from the case and a fantastic example of how mixed up people are on the law, and how vulnerable this makes sex workers (and sometimes clients too).

The NUS refused to comment, but did mention the Swansea project.

I can confirm the Swansea project are very welcoming, and will provide an ear to any student, anywhere in the country and they seem to have a good supportive attitude towards sex workers.

I haven't heard this one (and won't until my proper Internet is back up) but a few years ago, I was a consultant for another sexuality documentary series of theirs and they did a good job of it.

Obviously it's going to have a youth focus, but there have been R1 producers looking to do it properly rather than going for sensationalism.

I found it on the BBCiplayer but I just cant get it to play. So that Tuesday morning I switched on to LBC and caught the last 15mins of a section on....Prostitution. It was really interesting as a independent sex worker called in and set the record straight.

Theres another programme on prostitution this coming Monday on Channel 4? I will be in the pub, I cant watch or listen anymore.
So, what she done said was that happy hoes ain’t hating and hating hoes ain’t happy.
