I sent an email to my MP, Nickie Aiken. I'm not convinced she'll read it but maybe some underling checks her inbox and might paraphrase what I wrote to her in a sentence or two.
Dear Nickie,
I heard that MP Diana Johnson is soon trying to get the Nordic Model sneaked into the new crime and policing bill.
I am a male escort and I have met thousands of female, male and transgender escorts via duos and via renting out an incall location by the hour to other escorts. I've never met one single escort who would want their job to be criminalised.
The media likes to portray escorts as either high class courtesans leading a rarefied existence of luxury and adventure or downtrodden and exploited prostitutes leading a nightmare existence in a world of trafficking, drug abuse and evil pimps. These dual extremes make good media but they are not reality. The reality for myself and every escort I have ever met would make very dull television and thus is not televised. We are just workers. We work. We do our jobs and get paid. End of story. Our jobs are no more or less fantastic or terrible than those of the average person regardless of their occupation. It's just work for us. That's the reality. Please don't mess up our work and make what we do more dangerous for us by making it more difficult for us to seek the help of the authorities when we are the victims of actual crime. Crime does happen. It can happen to anyone regardless of their job. And when it happens to us, we'd like to be able to ask for help knowing that we're not criminals and that we're entitled to the protection of the law.
I strongly oppose any criminalisation of prostitution which would make the purchase of sex illegal.
Criminalising clients does not stop prostitution, nor does it stop exploitation. It drives prostitution further underground, making it more dangerous and stigmatising for people working as prostitutes.
The proposals should be withdrawn.
I'm a moderator on r/SexWorkers/ on reddit so if you'd like help posting on there, let me know and I can help. Then you could ask the opinions of 156,000 sexworkers. I'm also a senior member on SAAFE, a forum for UK escorts, you'd be welcome to ask there too. You won't find any escorts who want their job to be criminalised.
I look forward to your reply.
Regards,
Oz
