Magazine article
« on: 22 July 2011, 11:24:09 am »
Hello members of SAAFE,

I hope you don't mind me posting on this forum. I work at love it! women's weekly magazine and we're looking for a girl who works as an escort and would be happy to appear in the magazine and talk about her work. After all the negative press about women who work in the sex industry, we're keen to speak to someone who is proud of what they do. She can't have featured in a magazine before and we'd want to do a photoshoot with her as well as speak to her on the phone for about an hour. We can pay ?300 for her time and trouble and the article will be read back before publication to make sure she's happy with it.

Please let me know if you can help with this.

Email me on: kerry.harden@burdamagazines.co.uk or call 0207 421 5434 if you're interested.

Thanks,

Kerry

Naturally you will be aware that any lady agreeing to participate is extremely unlikely to allow her face to be shown, or for her legal name to be given, including to you? Outing ourselves in a mainstream magazine would cost the majority of us far more than three hundred notes, after all, considering that we would be unlikely to be able to work for some considerable time, if ever again.

I'm not aware of any negative press specifically about women who work in the sex industry (as opposed to the usual rubbish about the industry generally), now that I think about it. Could you post some links for us all?

I know someone who did an article for one of those type of mags, she got a lot more than ?300 for it ;)

She didn't give her real name, although the mag thought they were using her real name, and it had started life as an "I'm fat & proud" piece, which morphed into "I'm fat and sit on men for money" - which actually DOUBLED the fee she was originally offered. The editor wouldn't allow ANY reference to sex or being paid for sex (as they couldn't print anything about illegal activities  ::) ), so it was more of a silly fun piece. I did a bit of research for my friend so she could sound genuine to the interviewer...it's actually one of the things that got me interested in escorting  - had I not been looking up about "squashing" for her, I would never have known there's a market for us SuperSizedBBWs!!

I can well believe it  ;D.

I do wonder how we're defining a 'girl' - I'm 38 so I obviously don't qualify, but since most people would use this word to refer to someone under eighteen and 'woman' to refer to another adult, I can only think they must want somebody no older than her late teens who hasn't been working for very long, and have thus posted on a forum aimed squarely at newbies. Cynical, me?

Well, think of the magazine target readership - they're likely to be up to 30, 35 or 40. They usually wouldn't want a 50 year old (unless they're coming from the "I'm an old granny and I service men -AT MY AGE, AND STILL LOVING IT!!" angle).

Here are a few examples of 'Love It' magazine articles about escorts.

http://www.loveitmagazine.co.uk/secret_lives_article.php?id=16 - Bog-standard glam life of the high-class escort article. "I discreetly counted the ?700 fee before tucking the payment away in my designer handbag."

http://www.loveitmagazine.co.uk/teaser.php?id=168 - 'My mum is a prossie' article. Starts off with 'this seedy lifestyle choice', but that seems to be provocative to get people reading, because it gets better: "although I wish she was doing something else with her life, I support her because she?s an amazing mum."

http://www.loveitmagazine.co.uk/teaser.php?id=174 - Became a prostitute to support her five kids and hates it. You feel sorry for her, of course, but it's a bit annoying to hear her generalise her experience to everyone else "It wasn?t a job any woman could learn to love. There?s nothing nice about being intimate with strangers"

I suppose if they do an article on someone who is an escort explaining why she's happy with her life, that could be quite positive. They don't seem to have any particular pro/con agenda, just the usual prejudices. ?300 for an hour on the phone sounds fairly decent, but there's the photoshoot as well, which could be another hour or two, including travel time.

I thought the title sounded familiar so I had a root through my Media Approaches email folder.

It turns out I said thanks but no thanks regarding yet another article in January, on the basis that I would not involve myself with a publication which had more than one exclamation mark on the cover. I think this is probably an excellent yardstick  :D.

As I have said on a few occasions I will be more than happy to do stuff like this AFTER I retire next year but Amy is right ?300 compared with the loss of revenue after clients see or hear you have done an article like that and aren't discrete?  :o

Kerry I will be more than happy to talk to you about being an escort but without the photoshoot  ;)
