Journalist looking for help/ advice
« on: 21 March 2012, 10:47:07 am »
Hello all..

So sorry for the nature of this posting. And taking up space...

I'm researching a story about Escorts who have either been trafficked into the UK.

And more specifically 'backpage.com'.

I have been inspired by the article below. My aim is to see if the same thing applies to the UK.

If anyone would be kind enough to give any advice on the subject I'd greatly appreciate it.

All correspondence will be kept in strict confidence.

Thanks for reading!

Johnny

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I doubt that you'd find anyone in those circumstances posting on this forum. The majority, if not all, of the women here have chosen to escort. Not because we're forced into it by someone, just because we can.

Just my personal opinion...

Of course.. Completely agree with you.

I suppose the reasoning behind my posting was the hope that someone on here might be able to help point me in the right direction. In terms of knowing someone whom might have suffered at the hands of a trafficker.

Johnny, out of interest, if two gigantic and hugely expensive police operations covering the whole of the UK and raiding over 1500 premises failed to find all but a handful of these zillions of trafficked women that we who work in the industry and our clients are supposedly wading waist-deep through daily (as reported by your paper here), what makes you think that we're going to be able to magic them up for you?

I really think this is the wrong site for you considering your newspaper has to be the biggest offender is prossie hating sensationalism.  A paper that coninually throws up the old stereotypes rather than honest journalism.  A paper that continues to portray us all as abused, forced, coerced, trafficked or drug addicted and would not know the thruth if it jumoed up and smacked them in the face.
Most of us choose this work, infact all of us on here do it because we WANT to.  Believe me if we knew someone was trafficked we would have reported it and had her helped and would never give her details to someone from the Guardian so they can re exploit her.

Why not go back to your editor and suggest doing a story on the real escorts and why they choose to do this job to support themselves and their families although it wont be such a big headline for you will it.  The old trafficked prossie stories are getting a bit old and overdone now and are so boring considering the police could not find anywhere near the amount that was suggested as it is all an exaggeration by a certain female MP to bring in the law where punters can be prosecuted for visitng a trafficked prossie.
here is an idea for your editor, start getting your journos to write facts not sensational falsehoods

After emails from the OP it seems he is more than willing to do a story on a normal escort who works because she chooses too although he did say film which is a little different to a girl giving her story anonymously.  To be honest I do not thinkmany girls will be willing to be on film and out themselves due to the views of others and the fact her faamily and friends may well disown her or at the least be rather angry.
Why not just write an article.  I would happily give my story if no pictures were needed and I did not have to use my name as my story is a little different to most although I did chosse this work I did it because I need to pay for my sons care and education which the government wont do as he is very low functioning autistic and mentally disabled  The gov will only pay if I put him in residential care which I wont as he is my son not an object to be discarded.

Danielle,

What an absolutely terrific post. It disgusts me the way this country treats mentally disabled people. Truly sickening. What a brilliant reason to take matters into your own hands and provide for your son.

I think a journo should do a story on escorting through choice but, without being disrespectful, not with an escort that chose to do it because of an unfortunate or difficult set of circumstances. Basically, "I became an escort because I like money and sex. Not because I had to provide for myself or anyone else, just because I can."

Then maybe Jo Bloggs might understand that it is freedom of choice and will that drives most escorts to do this job.

I'm full time carer for my adult son who has Aspergers Syndrome too Danielle, and escorting for exactly the same reasons!

Awwww thanks figa:-)  Well you're doing it for the same reason, just because your children are able bodied doesn't make you any less wonderful:-)  See quote below:-)

A woman who sells herself to buy bread for her aged mother or her child, stands upon a higher moral plane than the blushing maiden who marries a money bag, in order to gratify her frivolous appetite for parties and travel.  Of two men, he is the less deceived, the more logical and rational, who pays his companion of an hour in cash, each time, than he who gets a companion for life by the marriage contract, whose society was purchased as much as in the former case.  Every alliance between man and woman in which either one is influenced by the substantial or selfish advantage to be gained by it, is prostitution.  ~Max Nordau, Conventional Lies of Our Civilization
