HMRC crackdown on agencies
« on: 04 December 2015, 03:26:04 pm »
Interesting article in the Grauniad today! "Strippers told to bare all about tax affairs under HMRC crackdown". 'An ?adult entertainment taskforce? will target strip clubs and online escort agencies that cover up thousands of pounds a day in profits'.

It seems the authorities crackdown but in a haphazard nonsensical way. Where I live a couple of the agency owners meet with an appointed police liaison officer, she's basically there to ensure girls aren't trafficked and so we feel comfortable to talk to police if need be.

But then there's all these raids (both agencies operate in the same way , eg 2/3 girls sharing flat)
So what are the deciding factors do you think that mean one agency gets busted and taken to court/prison, and another agency owner is meeting for coffee every month with an assigned police officer ?!

HMRC are interested in tax, I'm not sure that this is a criminal or police crack down.

Police aren't interested in tax. They're interested in minimizing criminal issues. So, they tend to tolerate parlours and agencies as they're seen as safer than the street or at least it's best to have open communications. HMRC is a whole different thing.

It's just plain stupid for an agency to not pay tax.

They are also doing a crackdown on strip clubs. I remember a few years ago  a strip club got raided and loads of dancers got done for benefit fraud and they were outed in all the local papers.

Massage parlours are also an easy target.

Problem with  HMRC tracking down agency owners real details as many agency escorts just do incalls from hotel rooms, not the agency flat. How will it affect indie escorts? Can HMRC just book an appt, turn up and demand to see your tax affairs? I am not bothered as I would just give them my accountants details.
