Guardian Comment Article - disturbing video game
« on: 28 December 2013, 09:55:24 am »
Check this out, I found it really disturbing that a video game exists that encourage 'killing' prostitutes.  Ok I know there are far worse games out there but its still pretty sick.  The article seems to be trying to link this to the killing of street girls (usual stereotype - junkies on the game).

Aren't all gta games against prostitutes in that manner? My sister pays the games never took much notice though

An awful, rambling article. Focusing on the lowest stereotypes of both gamers and prostitutes. It starts with how this game encourages prostitute murder in real life, focuses on a prostitute who died from a complication of drug abuse and finishes with how the game encourages people to disrespect prostitutes. As a prostitute who plays gtav and visits and even kill prostitutes in the game i call bullshit.

As a gamer, I find it incredibly sad when the newspaper starts reporting on how a game encourages real life behaviour.  I'm replaying assassin's creed right now, but you won't catch me jumping from rooftop to rooftop sticking armblades into people's throats.  And Manhunt never made me feel like I should be slaughtering people whenever I'm trying to get out of somewhere, and Prototype never made me think I could fly if I slit my wrists and point them at the ground.

Games are games, they're fantasy.  GTA is probably one of the tamer games aimed at 18+ out there.  Scaremongering is something that gamers and games face on a semi-regular basis, you know, despite studies that show the exact opposite of what they're claiming.

Has the author of this article just discovered GTA for the first time? ::) I remember doing this in 2003/04. Right now I'm playing Bioshock but I haven't, as far as I'm aware, moved to an underwater dystopia and started shooting fire out of my hands.

I think it was more to do with what someone said in the comments.  The author was trying to draw attention to an issue - I am guessing the dangers that prostitutes face- and choose a way that would bring about the most attention.  The problem is, however,  no one is really focusing or really discussing the risks that prostitutes face but more talking about the game and what risks the games poses to prostitutes.
