Documentary: Sex with landlord in lieu of rent?
« on: 15 November 2017, 04:52:58 pm »
Hello,

I am a researcher working on a documentary about people who have had a sexual arrangement with their landlord in lieu of paying rent - and I wondered if this is something anyone here has experienced or whether you know anyone who has? I'm interested in understanding whether this is a relationship you felt in control of and whether you preferred it to paying for rent?

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss at ellie.rose@popkorntv.com.

Many thanks,
Ellie

Could you explain the sex work link, please? If the programme is specifically about prostitutes dishing out freebies to their landlords (which I suspect most of the people here wouldn't do, but I'm prepared to be corrected) then fair enough but if it isn't a programme about sex workers then I'm not really sure why you're asking us?

The most unpleasant thing about the grotesque, scuzzy room ads popping up in the classifieds and that Shelter were warning people about is that they were aimed specifically at young women who were vulnerable and would likely never want to do this, not those of us who shag strangers morning noon and night for cash anyway. You'll also have to clarify what you're offering by way of renumeration, since I don't see any mention of it in your post and obviously you wouldn't expect anybody who is having to shag their landlord for somewhere to live to just drop everything and help your production company make money for free.

There's no shortage of 'landlords' doing this, and in some cases just arseholes with spare rooms who prey on homeless, troubled vulnerable young women offering free rent for sex. There have been a number of prosecutions for this type of thing and rightly so.

No one sees this other than an exploitative relationship and to think that this is some kind of norm among sex workers who might 'prefer it to paying rent' is just ridiculous.

I've merged this here because it's not really a sex work matter; the news story, such as it was, was about the rising number of small ads targeting vulnerable people who have few options and often nowhere to live by sleazy wankers who are breaking the law in doing so, since inciting someone to become a prostitute (payment or gain does not have to be money) is not legal.

As above, the idea that people who can earn many times a weeks rent in a few hours of having sex with strangers and know it are going to be mauled about for free in exchange for a bed in some grim box room is a bit optimistic :).

Well your post was about a daytime TV programme news story that your friend had sent, so I assumed that was what you were asking about :)

I wouldn't let any random bloke near me for anything other than cash, but in this instance bear in mind that if you don't kowtow to everything he wants (whatever you agree to begin with), you're going to be homeless. A landlord who knows you are working is also in a position to spy on you and your clients, go through your stuff when you aren't there and since contracts based on sex are not legally enforceable you could also find that you wonxt have a proper tenancy agreement either - these are designed to protect you and your rights. What ifnhe decides that a free hour once a week (or whatever was agreed) isn't enough and he wants a blowjob every day or something equally unpleasant and inconvenient?

There are people who are happy to swap their services for other services (photography and so on) but when it's far less complicated and more professional to just earn the money and pay your way, I don't think that many of the posters here are that likely to.

EDIT: There are threads related to this on the board, but I'm knackered so I'll.havd to find them in the morning :)
