BTG UK wide research online sex work- Update!
« on: 07 November 2016, 10:14:57 am »
Hi All,

An update on behalf of the Beyond the Gaze research team!  Those who've read early posts will know the BtG is a  participatory action research project looking at how online and digital tech has shaped the UK sex industry with a particular focus on working practices, conditions, safety and regulation.  Our research fieldwork phase came to an end in spring 2017 that involved;

online survey of  internet based sex workers
online survey of customers of internet based sex workers
Interviews with online sex workers
Interviews with customers of online sex workers
Interviews with police & advertising platform reps/webdesigners
Survey of sex work support projects

Big thanks again to all who took part in the online survey and interviews. SAAFE has supported the research from day one and the support has been invaluable.  People's participation means we have lots of data & since spring 2017 we've been analysing & writing up the research, on 23rd January 2018 we launched findings.

*We held a launch event on 23rd Jan 2018  & five briefings went live. They are available FREE for download on the BtG website www.beyond-the-gaze.com/briefings/  amonsgt  others there is a summary overview of findings and based on findings from the customer survey. Thanks to those who got in touch and who attended! Great to have you there. SAAFE were represented at the event.  We got quite a bit of media coverage. Here is one example from the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/society/2018/jan/23/internet-making-sex-work-safer-report-finds

*We're writing up various journal articles which in more depth explore findings from different aspects of the research. One has been published already in the journal 'Technology in Society' it's called ?Behind the Screen-Commercial sex, digital spaces and working online?  ,  it's open access so you can download it from our website at: www.beyond-the-gaze.com/journal-articles/

*A book 'Internet Sex Work' based on some of the data was published in November 2017 www.palgrave.com/gb/book/9783319656298  so this gets research knowledge into the libraries./academic literature

*We're also working with sex workers & NUM to produce safety info for the NUM website which is being redesigned, this will be informed by the findings from the research with online sex workers.  So look out for that on NUM and BtG websites later in Spring.

You can also follow us on twitter @BeyondtheGaze  (we're pretty active on there)   or keep an eye on news posts on the BTGwebsite  www.beyond-the-gaze.com   Of course you can always get in touch with me direct if you have any queries about the research -  via PM on the forum,  email rosie.campbell@leicester.ac.uk  mobile: call, text or what'sapp 07834148333

Hi SAAFE members.

Can you help us?  Our online survey for online sex workers has been live for 3 weeks now and we've had a good response but responses are slowing up now and we know there are lots and lots of  SAAFE members who haven't as yet had chance to take part or have a think about it - life is so busy. We really need a strong voice from escorts via this survey to make it the largest UK survey of people working in the sector to really be in a better position to influence policy nationally. We are keeping the survey open till the end of January!

For all who take part there is the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw for 3 x prizes of ?50 store vouchers.

If you would like to take part in the survey, please go to the survey through the following link:
https://leicester.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/btg-sex-worker-survey  This survey is being advertised through various online platforms, networks and projects, so please only complete the survey once.

Thanks those who have done the survey already! Great if others could to have a think about taking part.  Just pm me if there's anything you want to ask about the survey or the wider research.   Rosie, University of Leicester

Thanks Kitty_69 and Joanna0300 for helping and doing the online survey, also to others who have done it, we massively appreciate it. We need as many people as possible to do the survey to have a strong voice from people in the sector! So if you haven't done it already please do. Here  is the link https://leicester.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/btg-sex-worker-survey

We hope all have a merry festive season and that 2017 is a good year!

Hi All,

On Behalf of the Beyond the Gaze Research Team I wanted to say a massive thanks to all who took part in the online sex worker survey ! It closed on 31st January & we had over 600 people taking part, making it the largest UK survey of people working in the UK online sector of the sex industry carried out to date. Which is bril! SAAFE has supported the research from day one and the support is invaluable.

As those who've read early posts will know the survey is part of a wider participatory action research project looking at how online and digital tech has shaped the UK sex industry with a particular focus on working practices, conditions, safety and regulation.  We are coming to the end of our research fieldwork which has involved the following;

  • online survey of  internet based sex workers
online survey of customers of internet based sex workers
    Interviews with online sex workers
Interviews with customers of online sex workers
Interviews with police & advertising platform reps/webdesigners
Survey of sex work support projects

So people's participation means we have lots of data & we now enter a phase of analysing & writing up the research in a final report, summary report, various briefings, a book, blogs and other mediums, these will be publicly available. We're also working with sex workers & NUM to produce safety info for the NUM website which is being redesigned, this will be informed by the findings from the research with online sex workers.  We'll also be having various knowledge share events, sharing findings in various places in the UK.   I 'll post here on the forum when these documents with findings are public & about the other activity and outcomes.

Hi All

I haven't posted for a while. At Beyond the Gaze we've been analysing findings and writing up, that continues. We'll have a book out in October published by Palgrave Macmillan all based on the findings about 'online sex work' . But we're writing various summary briefings   focused on different aspects of the research e.g. one that gives a summary overview of all findings, one on safety and crime,  one on policing and regulation, one on findings from the customer survey amongst others all which will be freely accessible on the Beyond the Gaze website. I'll post here when they are available.  We're also producing the safety info for the new National Ugly Mugs website, to be launched later in the year.
Thanks again all who took part in the research.
Best Rosie

Hi Folks,

Quick update of BtG project since we launched our findings in Jan 2018 we've been doing various, sharing our findings far and wide and trying to get them into policy debates .That has been especially important at a time of SESTA/FOSTA in the US and some debates about similar legislation in the UK- our research highlights  the damaging impacts such laws could have for sex workers safety and livelihoods and that there was no support for such bans on adult services content amongst online sex workers nor the police. Also our findings were able to be used to challenge recommendations from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Pop Up Brothels - which recommended making it a crime to purchase services and the banning off online advertising. As well as highlighting there was no support for such amonsgt online sex workers and the majority of police who took part in the research our research provided evidence that such law would  jeopardize the safety of sex workers. Check out this piece in Inews  from Dr Kate Lister (Whores of Yore) on 'This is what the report on pop up brothels missed out'  www.inews.co.uk/opinion/this-is-what-the-report-on-pop-up-brothels-missed-out/

In early September we publish some further resources including info on protecting safety and privacy for online sex workers written by sex workers and informed by our research. Also practice guidance for health and support services about working with online sex workers. We continue to publish journal articles based on the findings, one coming out soon in the British Journal of Sociology on  safety, we'll post when it's out.

BtG comes to an end in September 2018  but  we will be maintaining our website for a year and Twitter @BeyondtheGaze  for some months.  Remember you can access our free briefings and other resources on the Beyond the Gaze website  www.beyond-the-gaze.com/briefings

Again a big thanks to SAAFE Forum who have supported the research throughout and the members who have contributed along the way. Couldn't have done it without you.
