Honey Money
« on: 07 October 2011, 01:02:15 pm »
A book was released a little while ago by a respected sociologist at LSE, considering the 'erotic capital' which women possess and the idea that sex work evens the score between the sexes.

There's a thought-provoking review from author Will Self here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/aug/19/honey-money-catherine-hakim-review
(Mostly good, but I think his difficulty with the references to sex work are reactionary rather than reasoned.)

Just wondering if anyone's read it-- I've ordered myself a copy.

Yes... I read it quite while ago. It was the first time I read a book by someone who has no personal involvement in sex work who seemed to have empathy towards women who are sex workers... made me feel quite emotional at the time.

I think the author said she had been a hardline feminist (one of those feminists who are 'very selective' as to which women are supported!) who had a change of heart in regards to sex workers.
