How to tell if a researcher is legit?
« on: 24 June 2015, 11:09:54 am »
I had an email from a research group from Lancaster, this survey was supposedly being done by 3 female Dr's. It was being carried out by sexworkacademic. Having read these posts i'm not sure if it was legit or not now. The person that contacted me was a girl called Scarlett, she was looking for male/female escorts that get bookings from female clients. They were prepared to send you a ?20 lovetoshop voucher for taking part. Looking back now i think i should of contacted the uni to see if there were anybody there by those names doing a survey by that name. But it's too late now as i took part in it yesterday at 4pm ish, it did take about 90 mins. Alittle longer than was expected, the results are due to be published Dec 15/Jan 16. SUPPOSEDLY. Having said that, Scarlett did sound like she was a proffesional researcher, but i'm sure with some coaching anyone can sound/act like a pro researcher.
If any of you have had similar experience please let me know, also let me know if you did any checking as i didn't..

Yes they are legit.

Things to ask for are their supervisors name, you can then check this out on the university website and contact them on their uni email address to verify. Anyone carrying out research will have also gone through the university ethics procedure, and should have some sort of reference you can check out.

Yes, we know this researcher is legit - she is a member of this forum and was at one time being supervised by Teela Sanders, who anybody with more than a passing interest in sex work research will recognise.

Scarlett was last seen (by me at least) a year or so ago posting on a punting forum about the same project, and Google will find you both that thread and her previous enquiries regarding punters and sex workers' partners. I can only assume they've expanded their search for escorts who see female clients to include women because they couldn't find enough straight men who were getting any work.

She told me the study required input from female escorts, I think she said it was to provide a comparison - something like that and I know she was interviewing women approximately 12 months ago, so it's not a recent development.

OK, it's not 'recent' then. The discussion I remember concerned men, but since I don't pay a lot of attention to these things I have no idea what the full remit was.

Yes, I remember the discussion which was mainly about male escorts.

The survey was being carried to see from the male escort perspective what the relationship was between female clients and male escorts. Why do women see male escorts or even female escorts. How often they see them, the reason for hiring men, race, marital status and professional status were among many of the questions asked. Questions asked of male escorts included how did you get into the indutry, sex health, buddying up and what do friends etc etc etc think. Surveys are due to last an hr, when Scarlett phoned me we were chatting for about 90 mins. Scarlett was ending her portion of the survey this week, so would no longer be partaking. She did say via aw email to me that another dr involved had an interview with "Closer" recently and it would be published soon.

I was quite suprised to see that the DR's carrying out the survey were all studying law or teaching to some degree..

Given that Scarlett strenuously denied finding the male escorts who claimed to be seeing female clients on Adultwork, that's interesting indeed, although not interesting enough for necessitate a protracted discussion about it.

Back on topic and in the hope that something useful can be salvaged from this thread (since that's the only reason I left it up), anybody who isn't sure about a researcher should check the credentials Mirror mentioned earlier, and make sure that any contact details they have are from a legitimate university - these will end with .ac.uk. As we've seen plenty of times in this section, there's some strange people about.
