If you felt like cancelling and couldn't face seeing him after he'd started haggling then I guess you did the right thing. You are deciding what is good for you, and how you feel counts the most.
I would personally still see him after declining his 'offer'.
When new clients ask for a discount I do think of them as a turn off, yet don't take it personally, as they haven't tried my service, they don't know what I am like, they haven't seen me, so they are not actually asking because they think I'm not worth they money, they are just trying thier luck.
It is cheeky to ask, but some of them don't mind making a fool out of themselves in order to pay less.
In these situations I always ask myself 'is this worth the money'. If they answer is yes, I will keep it sweet and turn a blind eye on their silly questions as long as they pay my full rate.
Another thing to be wary of is that he was already in a close proximity to your house, and in this case he was just a little clown who didn't kick too much fuss about you cancelling, but had he been one of the nasty breed, he could have caused you trouble.
