Well it's true that drug companies are making money but cause of the cost it's not going to be approved by the government. It been approved by the FDA. This is why drug companies are trying to fight India and Thailand over the cheaper generic versions cause they are ripping people off and good as killing people who can't afford. As for the side effects it very dependant on the person, and if a person was going to be prescribed this by a doctor, a person must not have liver disease, bone density problems.
Drug resistance is a result of people not sticking to the medications (people already infected) or not following directions. The sad thing is if everyone got tested regularly there would be a major decline in HIV because they could be put on medication, which significantly lowers a negative persons chance of becoming infected.
I am not blindly just making up a thread, many doctors around the world are now seeing PreP, early treatment and other forms of prevention as a means of stopping the epidemic. And many countries around the world are holding PreP trials which are showing more than promising results. It's not an illusion.
I have seen what H.I.V or AIDS can do as I grew up in Southern Africa when people were dropping like flies in mid to late 90's. I have had family members who have pass away from Aids and currently on treatment in Africa, all straight. H.I.V is a very touchy subject, even when i bring it up with other gay men when meeting for a drink everyone tries to avoid the subject or get offended ( my experience, don't know yours) And yes you can catch other S.T.D's if you don't use condoms e.t.c But if I am sleeping with a higher than normal amount of people, even with condoms, I do feel it does increase my risk compared to the normal person.
I do agree, that the general population should not regularly use this, just people in higher risk and people who it won't harm their health in the long run.
