Amy I think someone mentioned you may be able to get an advance on the payment especially if you have children x.

I called universal credit today and had to wait on the phone for quite a while. When I finally got through they told me I have to do a telephone appointment and the earliest they have offered me is 21st April! Has anyone else had to wait 3 weeks for a telephone appointment? It’s bloody crazy, I have bills to pay, I was hoping to get a payment from them a lot sooner than that

Yea near enough and seeing as I am just trying to tie over until the self employment payments its a nuisance. Thankfully I am not so hard up that I need to advance but seeing as you need the interview before you can get one (as I understand) god knows how people without savings are coping  :-[

You can but you'll be paying back an amount before you know what you get. Work out what you can scrap and I mean budget for £1 meals that way it wont affect for remaining payments or be forced to pay it back.

You can. You need to request an advance.

I managed to have a telephone appointment yesterday, originally it wasn’t going to be until 21st April. She told me that my first payment would be 1st May. I said to her if I could have an advance payment. Her answer was no as you have funds in your account. She said we only give advice to people that have nothing. I’m just wondering how others on here managed to get an advance? I don’t have children but I have bills to pay and have no money coming in.

I find that strange and would query that immediately. As far as I know from experience, you're entitled to have £16 thou in savings in your account and still qualify for UC and a prompt advance if asked for. Citizens Advice is your friend.

Think she was mainly meaning the advance which they usually only give out if you have no money to survive on til you get your first payment. If she got money in the bank probably not considered urgent.

I managed to apply for universal credit but getting an advance wasn’t something I could do which I thought was unfair. I have heard that escorts have managed to get an advanced, I’m thinking do they say that they have nothing in the bank account then? I see that you can apply for an advanced from your UC account, is that how you managed to apply for an advanced payment?

I said to her well I still have to pay my rent and my bills. She seemed to get a bit funny and said well you have to use the funds that you have in your account.

She said to me if you had more than 6,000 in savings then you wouldn’t be able to get universal credit. I have heard that as long as you don’t have more than 16,000 then you can apply for universal credit. It’s not like I have loads and loads in my bank account but yet she said you have to use your funds to cover rent and bills! Someone else just said to me then I can try applying for an advance via my UC account. I’m thinking of trying that and see what happens.

She didn’t explain to me that I have to pay it back but I did gather that. When I asked her how much I would be getting she said I don’t know as it hasn’t done the calculation yet.

If the money in your account is savings, you'll be able to recoup some of that when you get the June self employment payments. This is how I am thinking about it, use some saving now, be very cautious with spending (which is pretty easy at the mo) put some of the SE grant money back into my savings account, get UC in the meantime (like you, if I can get it, will be beginning of May) to ease the pressure off my savings as I don't have a lot as I am a part time worker, and also in case something goes wrong with SE plan, as I don't fully trust this government to do right by workers.

The advances are for people who have no funds for food at all, and if you got it you'd have to pay it back and be no better off than if you just used a bit of savings anyhoo. The only benefit to having an advance that I can see is if you literally have no other source of funds (although I do of course think this government's benefit structure of making people wait a month is bollocks of the highest order).

Yes the emergency advance same day in your account is supposed to be for people with no money to survive til the universal credit comes in but if you have savings why would you need it? It is not like it is free it comes off your universal credit each month and needs to be repaid within 12 months.

I know 3 other people that have got it they said they never had hardly anything to get by on til the universal credit came in so got given it.

I do no 1 other who said they had 2.5k in there bank til they get there first UC payment and they mentioned about the advance and got told it is only for emergencies you have enough to survive on. That response totally makes sense to me.

I might well have got this mixed up with something else, but if not then a major complaint about universal credit has been how long people had to wait to get anything - it's at least a month, I think? March 16th was only three weeks ago tomorrow so I wouldn't give up just yet :)

Not sure girly girl, I think it's always harder to claim benefits if self employed but not 100% sure. If you did it as a escort would they want to know loads of info about your work name and such. I was warned once to be careful with getting AW feedback as it could be used by tax office to see if what you declare as earnings matches work on AW. Might be rubbish but got me a bit worried especially as ex is apparently keeping a eye on my AW profile and threatening to report me to DWP.
