Does anybody on here know of a hair stylist in Cardiff that cuts black hair? I can't find one at all and I need one quite badly for my offspring before she shaves off all her hair in desperation! Yikes! I know it's a long shot to ask, but you never know, somebody might know. I have googled it and come up with nothing.

, but I do know black hair, or in this case mixed hair. It will require some special care. Your offspring has a lovely mixed version of European and African and this comes with its own set of problems. It is wavy, and a bit frizzy, and when wet it turns into delightful little tightly curled ringlets. Which are impossible to get a comb through. A boy is easier, now if said offspring is a girl! It will get expensive, requires even more attention, to keep it glossy and lovely. Because you will need to beat it into submission and keep it there, for it to be manageable.
If it is a girl, you may need to travel to get it sorted by a professional, and you will probably have to work till the wee hours of the morning an extra week a month just to pay for the service! I am not kidding! Black hair is EXPENSIVE! For me and my daughter, I spend about 400 Euros a month, just in salon visits, and that doesn't include the serums, dressings, shampoos, and conditioners, needed for home maintenance. It is an investment. Good luck.

Well; what I do whenever I need to find a barber in a new city is I just go to the black neighborhoods and they are everywhere! When I lived in Miami I drove 20 miles on a whim to the northside, and 2 years later I still go to the same barber when Im down there

By Joanna I guess you mean Abby, the OP. Abby says she needs the advice for her daughter, not herself. So I'm assuming (judging by the description on her website) she's Caucasian and it's her daughter that's mixed race. If Abby was black I'd assume she'd have needed to find a black hairdresser long before now.

Living nowhere near you I'm sorry I can't help. That's the good thing about living in London, all my hairdresser and subsequent needs are met locally.

My children's dad is black. They have this gorgeous hair and skin tone, huge brown eyes, brilliant boobs and let's not go near the arse! It's utterly unfair really, us white people don't look nearly as good as we age.

My daughter has never cut her hair ever in the whole of her life, she has kept it in bobbles and braids for the main but at the age she is now, she wants more. Every hairdresser I have asked has almost shrieked and backed off with their scissors - they won't go near it. I do not want a trek to London every few months for a darn haircut!

Everybody still calls me Jo you know, it's odd. Regulars can't get used to it so still call me Jo! Ha!

I will check out your suggestions now, I don't know how you lot found them I think I am just bloody impatient, I look, can't find and then give up.

For the sake of sanity I'll keep calling you Abby. You changed it for a reason so it would make sense to do so.
I wouldn't take her to just any hairdressers so I'm not suprised they refused you. They have little or no experience of the sort of hair your daughter has. Don't you know what happened to Oprah? In her early days, the network she used to work for sent her to a regular hairdresser, thinking that a perm was a perm and that there was no difference for hair textures. Needless to say most of her hair ended up on the floor.

Maybe a local beauty school would be willing to give it a go! I know this sounds scary, but they really are afraid of making mistakes and eager to try new things. Ask if one of the instructors is willing to cut her hair, because they will be even more qualified than a standard hair dresser. You might get the service for free if you're lucky since your daughter will effectively be a teaching model for them. They may also be able to refer you to an expert.

If you want to avoid chemical products, which may well be advisable on a younger lady, then henna might work for hair straightening, or de-curling. I've heard very good things about henna on african hair, although I have no personal expereince of this myself. I use Logona products (at home) and they've obviated the need for straightening. You can change your hair colour with henna or not as you wish. It's cured my excema as well. This does involve putting enormous amounts of green mud on your hair for two hours, but it's worth it.

There are a lot of low quality henna products around though. If your daughter wants to try it, this site is very informative. Then buy go here for good stuff without the international shipping.

This is brilliant, thank you very much.
She wants it thinned out as it's super thick and she wants it coloured as well, no bleach was the only rule I had!
We will get it sorted this holiday as I promised her she would get it all done before school goes back. About to take a booking now to pay for it all! The things we do for a decent haircut!
My mother used to put a bowl on our heads and cut our hair that way when we were younger! The stick I used to take for that in school.... Helmet head - she still thinks it's all jolly funny to this day, the old witch, ha....
You have all saved me the task of walking up to random black ladies and asking 'excuse me, who cuts your hair?' I am sure had I been very complimentary I would have got away with it but rather would not do that, so thanks for all your help

Not sure how it works with 'african' hair, but when it comes to oriental hair, if I wanted it coloured, which I always have I have been told by several hairdressers that they have to bleach my hair first before applying the colour I want and that is just a bit to much messing with my hair, so I've never done it.

Oh my goodness- I have the same hair as your children by the sounds of things Abby- and I have literally just had my first haircut at the hairdressers since the early '90s!!! So I totally sympathise with the looks of confusion us mixed-race-hair-owners get from hairdressers anywhere outside London. The sentence "errrrrrr, I'm not quite sure how to do your hair!" has plagued me since the age of about 11, and I have avoided hairdressers for a loooong time because of this. Daily screaming sessions at my hair "just grow straight or curly, will you?!! You can't be both goddamn it!!" can also be heard from my bedroom window.

Not very helpful for advice for Cardiff, however, as I went to one in London...... but tell her to put down that head-shaver this instant! Have you tried looking for independent hairdressers who come to your house, who are also mixed race?

I sympathise with you all, my hair like Cassies needs to be bleached before i can go any colour other than black, and as I'm getting older is becoming more and more Afro/wiry, many "white" hairdressers don't want to attempt it now, although I'm lucky i have a visiting lady who in her own words "will try anything once" and her and my hair are so far compatible.

Abby is it possible to get to somewhere like Bristol?
I know st Paul's has a wide African and Caribbean population, although it has been a few years since i got lost around there, and its closer to London, if you can navigate that bloody ring road
