Seeing a gynaecologist
« on: 04 August 2014, 08:28:21 pm »
Ladies, how do you get to see a gynaecologist in the UK?
I have my first smear test in London next week. But it's with a nurse????
I'm used to seeing my gynaecologist every 6 months. She does the smear but she also check my boobs, my vagina, well, she does a lot. She also prescribes my pill for 6 months.

Will I ever see a gynaecologist in the UK or shall I just go for a private one? It just feels weird to know that I get "only" a nurse.

You will get seen quicker and expertise as well as comfort going private.

In uk it is usually just nurses who take smears and other checks and then they go for testing by specialists.

I only ever saw gynae when pregnant.

There really is no need to go private.

You can get whatever you want checked whenever you want it, you just need to ask at doctors.
Beauty is nothing to do with having a pretty face.
It is about having a pretty mind, a pretty heart,
And most importantly a beautiful soul.

Unsure where the OP is from, I have been told that private healthcare in other countries can be a bit over the top - because it's being paid for by the insurance company. This is only based on something told to me, anecdotal and may not be the same for everyone in every other country.

France. Well, it's a complex healthcare but at least I can see my specialists when I need to.
And I've been with the same gynaecologist for like well, forever.
Here when I want to see a GP once it's dr x and then dr y. So how is my gp supposed to know me/my history if they don't know me.

But that's a different story.

I wait for an appointment with the same GP and have built up a relationship over many years, if it's something that's an emergency and continuity is less important I see the first Dr available.

Contraception there's a special contraception Dr who my GP will refer me to once she's given my options, and her recommendation based on knowing me and my history.

Sexual health I visit the GUM clinic.

I am aware of my body and it's changes, if anything seems wrong I book an appointment to see my GP and ask him or her. The wait is worth it.

Thanks. I'm putting all that down on my list since my GP is tomorrow.
Re smear test. I don't feel secure about it being just a nurse. I'm used to things being done differently. It's just that it doesn't feel safe enough.

Nurses are usually highly trained and respected in the UK. If anything they tend to have more hands on experience and from what I've seen they are just as safe as Drs (in fact some people consider nurses to be more experienced and safer, often because they see more patients ;D) and are bound by professional codes.

Alternative is for you to go privately but the person taking the smear may still be 'just' a nurse.

As far as I'm aware All your notes ( made by whatever Dr /Nurse that you see in the practice are all on the computer )
So doctor just checks when you were last there
Also medical notes from hospitals and appointments. Like A&E are generally on there as well once updated

I'm going to echo most of what the other ladies have said, but here's my input ... :)

* Smears in UK are taken by trained nurses. Please don't think that doctors are any better at this - they're not. Taking a smear is relatively 'simple', it's the microscopic screening that needs more expertise and is done by proper lab scientist people at a hospital.

* Boob checks - you need to be checking your breasts every month, just after your period has finished. No one else knows your breasts better than you, get to know them even more intimately than you already do. Drs, nurses, gynaecologists cannot detect the tiny changes that you will or can notice long before they do.

* Sexual health - please visit a sexual health or GUM clinic. They are properly and fully trained in all aspects of vaginas, penises and all things viral, bacterial, and prevential.

* Generally - if you are experiencing any symptoms that are abnormal FOR YOU, get to your GP as soon as you can. This means that any odd or strange bleeding, smells, itching, leaking, skin/appearance changes, lumps, sores and whatever! means you need to see your GP at their earliest available appointment.

Hope this helps :)

I would like to point out that if you were going to your gyne every 6 months for  a smear, you won't get that here on the NHS unless you feel there is something wrong or your last result was abnormal.  I used to go for a smear every year as I had a couple of abnormal tests back in 99 and 2000, but in 2010 I was told I couldn't have one every year due to NHS cutbacks and if everything is normal then I have to come back every 3 years otherwise they just throw my tests in the bin and the nurses get a warning for performing one before I'm actually due one.
If you feel you want to have a smear every year for your own piece of mind then go private, but getting them done on the NHS every few years is just as good.
As for everything else I echo what Cat_BBW says.

Yeah, back in '93 I got a smear done and had abnormal cells.  Got the horrible treatment and then had to have smears every 3 months  :FF. They really were on the ball.

I am now of the age where I don't need to get smears (60+) but they have said I can still do it every three years if I wish and I will as much as I hate them.
