Paying tax
« on: 18 April 2009, 09:44:56 am »
Just thought that those who were so keen to tear me to shreds a couple of months ago would be interested to hear that I have set my website up to help me record my incomings/expenses and will shortly be registering for national insurance.

Fuck me it's complicated though

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Good for you. I recomend not declaring yourself as an escort on your form though. Just say therapist or something of that nature.

What are you going to say your profession is to HMRC (if that's not too nosy to ask). I told them I was a model and now I'm a bit fecked as I can't claim certain things as expenses that I actually use as an escort, because they don't fit the profile of a model's earnings. If I had said personal trainer or masseuse it would have been much better. Damn it!

I am still deciding tbh. Not entirely certain

i am not sure,....

i think theoretically you could put down what you are actually doing, due the profession is legal, however i wouldn't put it down

What are the actual drawbacks?

Personally I choose not to declare escorting as my profession because of confidentiality- and I don't know how much access to this sort of stuff future employers get, but I wouldn't want to have spent the last 5 years slogging at uni only for the word "escort" in my employment history to affect any future employment prospects, simply because society doesn't yet accept us. But then everybody has their own plan and agenda, so this is just my personal take on it all!

Also, I think technically you can get pulled up on the fact that you don't have invoices to prove your earnings etc (unless you give these to clients?!) so HMRC can look at your rates on your website and estimate your earnings (probably grossly inflating them in the process!!!). And if they decide to question the figures you submit in your tax return, you have nowt to prove that you haven't actually earned the massive amount they quote you, and are left escorting til you are 95 to pay off the tax bill. (Although there must be a market for 95 year old escorts. Talk about a USP!)

Anyone with more knowledge know about this in more detail? Or am I talking 2.30am post-essay-writing crap?

yes i wouldn't put it down... due the stated reasons above.

yes we are unfortunately not accepted in this prudish and actually 'superficial' society and depending what you do later in life that could be a set back,
and carla you are right, we don't have real invoices and issuing invoices to clients might not be appreciated by them. lol, you also would supply the company number or whatever that is called and from there they could look up quite a bit of your details,
also they would estimate your income and it most likely is inflated as carla said, i think it is twofold one there is not enough research figures for them to get a realistic estimate and their prejudices and stereotypes would do the rest,

You can register online- Have you seen the tax section here on saafe? It was not so bad, though I nearly put myself down as an offshore fisherman by mistake. It helped me a lot, especially Jolyons stuff! I am registered as an Alternative Therapist. Getting my first NI thing in the mail was a huge thrill :)
