How the hell do you budget?
« on: 15 November 2009, 03:29:00 am »
Ok, I just realized this week I made more than many people make in 2 weeks, or atleast in the jobs I worked in  :P  yet at the same time I'm like freaking out because I went thru like half of it and cant figure out what the hell it went into. I added up the things in my account quickly along with some receipts I found, and it still didnt add up to what I spent. So Im thinking either someone is going thru my wallet or Im just out of control!

Im getting ready to move on my own again soon, I think its a must to start getting a handle on the cash. Not so much being a tight-wad (cause I cant stand cheapskates and being cheap) but with cash coming in at all times during the week, it seems impossible to sit down and workout a budget, plus I dont know when someone's gonna call me.

I know we all make different amounts, but Im sure at some point the spending can catch up with the earnings...and then BOOM you might not see another client for a week or 2 (which is scary as fuck when thinking to live on my own again).

I make sure I have a back up fund in case I cant work or have unexpected expenses. If I dip into it then I pay it back when I can.
Budgeting is pretty simple. Make your rent and bills before you go out spending. Pay bills immediately so you are not tempted and avoid walking past your favorite stores on the way!

First you need to work out what's actually going on. Write down everything you earn and everything (really everything) you spend, then put it in a spreadsheet. It's tedious, but it'll open your eyes.

As for coping with a variable income, the only way to do it is to save. You can save a specific amount each week, put away a certain proportion of everything you earn, or give yourself a certain amount of discretionary cash after rent and bills and put the rest in your savings. However you do it, savings come just below rent and bills in priority and above food, toys and entertainment at all times unless you're actually struggling to feed yourself. Once you've got enough to live off for a month or two then you can relax a bit if you want to.

I do this too, and try to have enough set aside to live on for three months just in case (accident or illness, long break - even if I suddenly decided I'd had enough and needed to get a job). I'm really lucky because I don't have housing costs beyond maintenance payments and this makes it easier to save, but even when I was on minimum wage I managed to stash a little bit away every week - you sometimes just have to bite the bullet and change your habits.

Writing down everything you spend is a brilliant way to shock yourself into tightening your belt - I'm not brave enough but if you keep regular records you will start to see patterns emerging which you can then do something about. There's a difference between being a cheapskate and just not wasting money when you don't need to - if you can't even work out what you spent it on, it can't have been that great  :-\.

i use the envelope tequnique  everthing i earn i shove in an envelope and i take out a tenner a day to buy bit and pieces for that day
at the end of the week i take out what i have earnt and put it into seperate envelopes
one for
my home  bills ie gas electric food
credit card bills
my flat /advertising bills
my bank  account for personal bills ie  car payments / direct debits
What left is mine to do with what i want I  normally save loads
i then put most of it into a seperate envelope( Unless i need to buy something)     for a rainy day i bundle in to one hundred pounds so that i know exactly how much there is at a glance and shove away  its amazing how soon it adds up

i make sure i keep enough aside for  three months min of living in case i break a leg or need to take time off and im very sad but i love to save money
Its sounds weird but it really works if you carry cash with you you will spend it so i carry the min amoutn with me that i need i never use my debit card and pay my credit card off in full every month

It just seems hard to tell. I mean, if someone is having multiple bookings per day...well obviously they are going to be able to budget and save more than someone who is making only 1-3 bookings per week. I mean, how can one save when they have to pay bills as soon as they get it, and then 3-4 days go by without getting anything. Its ridiculous.

Thats what I mean Hazel...

Something happened couple months ago which everytime I think about it, I wanna  :'(

I had an overnight...and got paid hundreds more than I have seen even the best reviewed and expensive escorts charge. But, the weeks before the booking were so slow and I got behind on the bills and stuff I needed. I had aspirations to chose between 2 things I have been wanting to get done for years.

Well, after I caught up on bills and other 'little' things...I only had enough to take a tour. The tour sucked and in the end I was broke and at square 1  :'(  The money went so fast. I could have sat on that for this entire slow ass month of December. It was alot of money! What makes it so sad, is that I dont know when something like that will present itself again. Nobody has given me that type of money before. There is a possiblity it could happen again in 2010, but I'm keeping quiet about it...

Thats why Im going to look for a 2nd income for the meantime, so I can enjoy more of my escort money  :P

I think the answer is a lump $um.

The idea of saving sounds so tedious. I rather have a couple grand than to add a dollar a day to a jar which could take forever. The reason why I need what I need is because I need it at this point in time  :P

Im going to practice saving though, putting in big amounts rather than penny pitching. But if I dont make enough money (e.g. 1 client every 2 weeks aint gonna cut it, dammit!) then:

HOW THE HELL CAN I BUDGET? aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhh

But staying positive, Im going to make a time frame...and work torwards that. I've still have 3 aspirations for the first half of the year I want to get done. And I-I-I- wonna do it!

Joey, everyone would rather have a couple of grand than not. I don't see your point.

Saving a dollar a day isn't going to get you anywhere fast, but if that's all you can afford how do expect to put away a lump sum? Are you relying on big jobs? If you do that then you're relinquishing control, and aspirations won't make any difference since you're leaving it all to chance.

Not saving doesn't necessarily mean that you've failed at budgeting. If your income's low enough that you're just scraping by, then having your bills paid every month is a success. If you have more than the minimum you need to survive but you decide that small luxuries like going for a night out are worth more to you than saving money, then as long as you stay within your means you're also succeeding at budgeting.

Saving money on a variable income requires some flexibility and we've mentioned ways to deal with that in this thread. In your case it's also probably going to involve making some sacrifices and/or getting another job. Wishing really hard isn't going to make things happen.

If I wish upon the brightest star....yes it will!  8)

I was being 'hypothetical' when I said saving $1 a day. I've been here long enough, Please tell me you understand my exaggeration by now! Well at this point, there's going to be a couple of changes Im going to make for the upcoming year so I can catch up on some things.

I think by adding another weekend job, and setting aside enough money for the rent will allow me to keep more in perspective of things.

I'm with Paris - envelope or cookiejars technique, rent, car, council tax, tax, etc plus one for rainy days, rest is mine to squander and if there's none left I don't squander.

Last night I did my final stupid thing for the year...Went out and partied with a friend I havent seen in ages, and I was supposed to be setting aside every penny to move tomorrow, SMACK!

I still made sure I set aside enough to move, but I also had some other essentials that needed to be taken care of prior to my move. At the moment I have just enough to move, get fuel, and eat canned food  :( But I got so restless from being inside for 2 whole weeks that the urge to party and get wild overwhelmed me...

Sacrifice. Survival. These are the 2 things Im going to have to learn to do no matter how bored, how frustrated, and how lonley I am!
