http://www. channel4.com/programmes/my-granny-the-escort
So this is airing tomorrow night.
"A frank, intimate and revealing portrait of three of Britain's mature escorts: older women who choose to sell sex from hotel rooms and their homes, all completely legally.
As well as topping up their pensions, all of these women seem to be enjoying themselves in their chosen and often new profession, but the film also questions how such a lifestyle can co-exist with their family lives and their roles as mothers and grandparents.
Their clients are men of all ages, sometimes as young as 20, but what is the motivation behind some men's desire to have sex with older women?"
Who will be watching?
-
Personally I think they have probably used older women who don't have a family or a family that doesn't care, or that doesn't speak to them, as I don't see anyone who doesn't want to be outed taking part in something like this.
-
Jings, I'm a granny of four so I'll be interested to see what they say. Best remember and set the sky+ cos my memory is sooooo bad ... And that's not with age, it's been bad since I was at primary school.
-
I know one of these personally well I did until she helped wreck my married life, as I worked for her ,
many years ago , she does not care all her family know what she does , she has been on TV a few times
I.E this morning , when it was on tv a few years ago , I am lucky my family know what I do , and to them it is
just a job , as long as I am safe , but I would never embarass them by going on television .
-

Even if I had ever planned to watch this, the breathtaking misogyny of this preposterous statement would have sent me hurtling back to my Breaking Bad box set in nary a second. Good one, Channel 4.
-
Is it just me who loathes these escorting TV documentaries? I feel like they never accurately portray the world of escorting, I think part of the problem is finding people who'll go on national TV and openly declare they sell sex, there's only a small amount who'll do that even if their friends and family know what they do.
These shows just seem to perpetuate a lot of harmful stereotypes about escorting and don't appear to show normal women earning an honest living and working just as hard as anyone with a regular job or business!
-
I totally agree with u Chloe x
-
I think many of us watch these programmes just to see what a mess of things they make. I know that is why I watch them anyway. People outside the industry will watch and get the totally wrong idea of how things work.
The only person who wins is the money men who are responsible for making the programmes and the smaller they keep their budget the better for them, more profit :FF
-
Car Crash tv is what i see it as, i dont want to watch but i know i will :-X

That was my thinking too...

Haha, exactly my thinking. And for ?90 an hour?? Keeping used condoms in the fridge?? Not a ruddy chance!!!
-
I thought that too ?90 a hour!! Wonder if she feels she needs to charge less because of her age? Not very informative so far!!
-
I,m sick to death of these prostitution, stripping, web cam and porn documentaries. There,s been loads on lately I don,t see the point of them but I find my self still watching. My family also know what I do some choose to ignore me some still speak to me but like as mentioned above I wouldn't feel the need to go on tv so every one knows. xx
-
I don,t see the point of them but I find my self still watching.
1. Cheap Tv for the companies that make them and sell them to the mainline Tv channels - lots of profit
2. Sex sells - good audience figures for selling adverts during the breaks
Bottom line it is all about the money, but what did "Granny" get out of it? 15 minutes of fame?
Sat watching Quirke, so not watched it yet.

I actually sort of enjoyed that... wasn't as bad as I thought it would be as most of the talking was done by the women themselves, who all seemed like fun, liberated individuals :) I thought it would be patronising and judgemental, but I'm glad it gave them a voice to say "I love what I do" :)
-
I watched the entire show with a regular (he happended to be here) and I have to say I was expecting a bit more, but what they showed wasnt so bad. Except for the condoms in a glass who are a bit grosse..
-
I watched the show on catch up this morning and was pleasantly surprised. I think the women came across really well and it showed a more realistic version of what life is like for independent escorts.
-
I've got to admit to finding the programme the most cringeworthy of all the ones I've seen. Almost made me ashamed of being old, never mind being a prossy.
Sorry to sound so patronising but if I sounded like those women on the phone I would want to shoot myself as for the really old golden oldie, I'm saying nothing. If she was trying to be convincing she failed badly, poor old soul. :(
But...... Live and let live .... So ladies if I ever sound like any of them ask me for my address to send the gun to so that I can shoot myself.
-
Channel 4 seems to be infatuated with prostitution at the minute, wasn't it channel 4 which featured the Rupert Everett one too? I enjoyed this one, not necessarily the narration because at points like expected the guy sounded a bit patronizing, but the program itself was pretty good ;D
I think if i were going to do something like that i'd choose a mask a bit more concealing than the one that the second lady chose and wouldn't have shown a picture of myself in my younger years, i can't help but think she kinda outed herself there to people that could recognize her which would be OK if of course she wasn't trying to hide her identity.

I thought so too, it did absolutely nothing to hide what she looked like at all O_O
-
I had a look on [another forum] discussing her and have linked to her AW profile where she shows her face, minus the wig etc. I don't suppose a civvie would find themselves on that kind of site unless they were looking for it themselves, but i think she gave enough away on the program to make suspicious minds ponder and if somebody were to go snooping then i don't think it'd take them too long to connect the dots. Oh dear :(

I agree, I was surprised, although I think the very elderly lady should maybe retire I thought she came across as a very intelligent, charming, young at heart lady and very very beautiful in her younger days bless her.
-
I have found myself worrying about the older lady's physical and emotional health, she seems so frail.
Heaven knows how much her family must worry about her.
If it wasn't for that I would say good on her!!
-
I felt concerns about the 85 year old as well...she just seemed a very frail lady and I could not help but think there are some evil buggers out there who take advantage of that vulnerability.
-
I agree Bibi :(
-
I thought it was really sad and wonder what the ladies got out of doing it?

Yeah the pandering to obvious phonewankers was cringey...must have been done for the camera to show how 'game' they were....in reality most of us would have said ' I will let you have a look at my profile pics and let you decide if my tits are suitable, godd day sir! ;D

Yeah I agree though I do think the guy doing the programme in the end was a bit concerned too. To me it sounded like he thought she was going to keel over.
The poor old soul sounded as though she just craved the company of people and perhaps the money too and nothing else, it was all far too overwhelming for her.
-
I felt uncomfortable with the final sentiment being that 'escorting ruined the oldest ladies family'. I was shouting at the telly, 'No it bloody wasnt, it was the press and your fearful and ignorant daughters!'
I would love to know about the family of the masked lady - lots of unsaid issues there.
But yes, random and unnecessary documentary! There have been so many in the last year. What's next? Swinging? T-girls? James Bond stylee hetero-ho's?

Swinging has already been done to the death, then came dogging followed by web cam girls and then they went for the escorts.
There are those that enjoy being the star of the show and those that don't, the middle men, tv channels / film production companies just look at the money they can make from the fools people that want their "15minutes of fame". Jeremy kyle has survived for 9 years on many such people.

People seem to like taking the piss out of sexual behaviours that are outside of the box.
Says alot about our secretly kinky nation! (The more you slag it off, the more you secretly love it! - scientific fact!)

I liked the guy who said everyone has a punter bag. I've never had one client with a punter bag and if I did I wouldn't let him use anything in it other than his own towels/shower gels etc.
-
I watched the oldest lady the following day on This Morning ( for my sins :-[ )
I dunno..it all seemed abit 'embellished' to be honest.. I wouldn't call anyone a downright Liar, but the gory details were all very rehearsed and formulaic? Apart from the guy filming himself touching and shagging her, are there any other guys coming forward- anonymously- to claim they pay this Lady ?250 an hour ( surely Channel 4 were offering recompense for an interview?
This lady's agency couldn't come up with anyone for their 25% ??? )
Phillip(a dick at the best o'times) and Holly were wetting themselves with mirth when she (the Escort, not Holly ) allegedly propositioned him in the corridor off-camera.
All very typical and unedifying as usual.. ::)
-

I have had guys with punter bags, generally they bring deodorant and their own brand of shower gel etc. One guy even had his toothbrush and paste and mouthwash...quite cute I thought.

Gosh... I am hoping you are not suggesting that Tv programs are staged? How will I ever watch it again with a modicum of sanity?

Can you imagine a real fly on the wall documentary of escorts though. HELLO Channle 4..... lets sit & watch Jeramy kyle while i wait for my phone to ring... *4 hours later*. wouldn't be all too exciting, i think these women feel they want to give a better name to the industry too so they play up the positives & don't mention the negatives which fair enough i guess.
A bit like if you were going to tell someone close to you what you do, you wouldn't go straight ahead tell them the dull parts, you'll tell them the good sides :)
-
I stumbled across this documentary on channel 4* My granny the escort*
Did anyone else view that?
good luck to them I say if they get work and enjoying themselves ;)

ha yes I couldn't stop laughing at that bit

I have a client with a punter bag lol it's great, he even brings his own towel!
-
I was like, a punter bag??? Its rare I see one of those.
There have been a barrage of sex industry programmes on lately. I usually end up watching them. There's usually something that makes me laugh, irritates me for being false or stereotypical and makes me sad. I especially hate it when they concentrate on trying to make people believe all sex workers are forced into it n abused or are doing it but hating it. Grrrr.
I prefer the watch Louie Theroux documentaries for the variety of subjects. I find those really interesting whether on sex or mental health or whatever really.
-

Me too...I admit I do watch these shows because I find them entertaining, but at the same time it would be good if sometime someone made a documentary about how it ACTUALLY is.
But then, I guess it's nowhere near how people think it is so probably doesn't make such good TV.
-
Would you have watched on channel 4 the documentary Taken ..
Hunting the sex traffickers?
Are there any other interesting sex worker related documentaries you have seen ?
I'd be interested to watch more .
-
Despite the clickbaity title, 'My Granny the Sex Worker' is worth a watch.

Omg I loved this!! I particularly liked the grandmother with the blonde hair, can’t remember her name.
There is also one on the All 4 App called The Brothel, it’s set in Germany and pretty good, but the former is the best 🤣
-
I watched it. It was very interesting but sad for the women. He made a lot of money off the women he was bringing over from.Brazil.

He made millions and only got 5 years!
His accomplice (who was a real cringe) only got community service.
Unreal really, bearing in mind how much misery they brought

I saw this when it was first broadcast, really interesting!
Watched 'Hunting the Sex Traffickers' too. Was somewhat incredulous about how the other guy, the one who was making AW profiles for the women, writing their blogs, finding them accommodation and moving them around the UK thought he was a good guy and wasn't complicit. The mind boggles at his delusion about himself. As an aside, due to the use of language, predictable topics and very narrow-minded views of female sexuaity/what men find attractive, I have often wondered if a man/men were ghostwriting various Brazilian blogs/profiles on AW. It seems that is the case for many of them.
What has been even more interesting, and sadly, in many instances, deliberately missing the point, is reading the thoughts of punters on this topic. Many don't realise that they are complicit too, or that don't want to consider that sex trafficking has many facets, and it's not just about women forcibly locked into rooms being made to service men and having to hand over all their money.

Well at least the programme bothered to ask punters - most don't. I'm surprised they didn't pop up here too, although it's really a programme about criminals exploiting people rather than sex work so the link to the vast majority of people here is tenuous at best.
There's another thread on this subject somewhere - I've got a few jobs to do and then I'll try to find it :).
EDIT: Found and merged :D

To clarify, the programme did not speak to punters, that aside if my own understanding from reading punter's comments on the programme, and that most are in denial about the circumstances of many of the Brazilians (and also other nationalities) with whom they are paying for sex, and of trafficking itself.
And yes, concur with your point about it being more about exploiting people rather than sex work/the link to the vast majority of us on here :)
-
The only way I can interpret that is that it's a reference to punting forums, so given that discussion of these, their content and their members is off topic here we'll swiftly move on (and if so it's partly my fault for misunderstanding the post, although if there was a Last Person I'd Expect To Be Reading That Shite flag, it would be flying very enthusiastically now) :)
I think the programme about older ladies as well as the brothel one have all been on again fairly recently, despite there being posts here about them from 5+ years ago. It's a pretty useful reminder of what might seem like a good idea at the time may not be quite as much so when it's being churned out for zillionth time 6, 8, 10 years on when you may have long since packed it in.
-
Sigh. I know, I know ::)
It is rare I do, and only really because of this programme tbh as I was curious to read their opinions... Stupid, I know.
Back on topic, I watched something on Channel 5 last week about cam girls/Only Fans and sex workers. I think it was called Adults Only. I think the most striking thing about this programme was how little it bought to the topic, and how narrow the types of women the producers have targeted. I think this is often my biggest issue with documentaries about sex workers, they have a certain type of provider in mind when in reality, we come in all shapes and sizes, and don't all look/dress a certain way.
