She was never a prostitute but got tarnished by the church as they didn't want a woman being held in such high regard. Think of it as fake news and being anti women. It's bad enough in this day and age but a lot worse back then.

Mary Magdalene was never a prostitute she was a very rich lady in her own right which was unusual back then and as the first reply said it was definitely fake news x

I don't know much about the movie but am interested in the subject. Apparently she played a very important role in the life of Jesus so much so some of his disciples became jealous of their relationship. Obviously the church had to tarnish her name as especially in those days women were not seen as important.

It's a very interesting subject, she was quite an inspirational woman considering what she was up against back then. So they tried to tarnish her the worst way they knew how... By calling her a sex worker...which just goes to show what we are all up against

Yet fast forward to today we are still a taboo subject and have to lead double lives. I doubt society will ever accept our work.
