Ladies... Makeup help needed!
« on: 15 March 2010, 09:04:26 am »
Never being a great one on the makeup front - never needed it really, a bit maybe. I find the years are going by, as they do and a little help is needed to ensure I remain looking normal and nice and do not resemble an old hag.

I need a makeup masterclass.
Firstly, aside from botox which is looking increasingly tempting - what do you ladies recommend for filling in the little wrinkles? There are so many creams out there now that claim to do this, that experimenting with them all would cost a small fortune so has anybody tried and tested any and which ones are good and which ones need to be thrown in the river?
How do I find an eyeliner that is actually waterproof? I suffer terribly from the eyeliner ending up under my eyes all smudged making me look sleep deprived, after half an hour of puttin git on!
I need something that remains where I put it, that being in a line under my bloody eye!
Liquid or pencil?

What foundations do you all use that actually really do give that dewy, fresh look and do not end up making one look like they are caked in the stuff?
A good concealer? Which one is good please, as in conceals? Not just pretends to conceal?

I have super sensitive skin.I have to bath in baby oil and use honey and brown sugar to wash in. Anything else, at all, shop bought and I get a rash but my face seems to be able to take cosmetics without a rash so any tips, brands, any help at all greatly received.

If you can be bothered, it might be worth going to a makeup artist for a 'lesson' - says she, who went a few years ago and came out looking like Coco the bloody clown ;D. But some of my friends have done it, and had success.

Other than that, I use YSL Touche Eclat to conceal - it seems to do what it says on the tin. I also use a No. 7 foundation for sensitive skin (Age Rewind) - it's meant to be hypo-allergenic, and it has SPF 15. For eyeliner I use Maybelline Kohl Express pencil - I wouldn't say that it stays on in every situation but, like you, I've been trying to find something that does for years, and this is the best attempt yet.

I don't wear a lot, but the mineral bases seem to come highly recommended and I d0n't think they're too hard to put on - there are primers you can get to wear on their own or under makeup that claim to smooth skin, but I don't know how good they are.

I like Benefit stuff best and their concealer is really good, but to be honest I just use Rimmel 'Hide the Blemish' for concealer and have done since I was a teenager (I remember reading once that they sell three of these every minute, or something). I don't really know about eyeliner because I don't wear it, but I would think that liquid probably lasts the best - you'd need steadier hands than me to be able to put it on properly  :-\.

body shop's foundation might work for you. it is not expensive and you can ask for a sample before buying. I think it fits those with sensitive skin. the only thing is that it doesn't smell so nice as they don't add perfume.

If you are talking about "boing" then that's the same stuff I use and it is really brilliant stuff  :)

I second Amy, on the mineral powder make up, Bare Essentials is the best out there. Plus they will happily 'do you' and let you walk around and see how you like before you buy. Concealer, Laura Mercer. Lipsticks, you should go with a nice light sparkly gloss, dark colors tend to draw attention to line around the mouth. For a quick fix, if you are feeling wrinkly, start drinking about 8 glasses of water a day, that helps. If you need a nice pick me up for your skin, try getting a green peel, it is microdermabrasion without the chemicals. But, be prepared to be indoors and not see anyone for about a week, as your skin peels and looks like a boiled lobster. But the results are quite lovely it helps get rid of some of the lines on the face and neck. As to an over the counter cream that will give drastic results. Prevage-serum, for eye, face, and night time. IT is some strong stuff! But it works, after about a week or two you will start a difference. Oh did I mention it is expensive as hell, so what I do I run around to different counters and ask for samples of everything, great way to try on and doesn't break the bank. Now if you are a more holistic girly, and would like a natural alternative, Ren is wonderful.  Great cleansers and the Gycolic mask is a treat.

Great advice so far, I would also recommend mineral makeup. You can buy the cheaper stuff if you want. What you SHOUlD be spending money on is proper skincare products! You should have been using something to prevent. I love Lancome for lotions. My mom and sister both have very sensitive skin and swear by it. ..there is nothing wrong with botox! :)

Its true about looking after skin (Im a Lancome nut myself!) your products will look better on you if you nurture it.
From my experience its trial and error which makeup will work best with your skin. Its a lot of fun though! Some great ideas here.

Ooh, I'm reminded by Violette and others that have mentioned minerals and samples, I hope it's okay to mention lilylolo.co.uk? I use their foundation and concealer but find the eyeshadow and bronzer to be absolutely awful, just to give the full review :P - anyway, the important thing worth mentioning is that they do samples. For about ?1 per sachet you can get tons of samples delivered and play around with shades and mineral application etc to see if it suits you. This can help if you happen to be odd like me and deeply frightened of makeup professionals who work at beauty counters!

Also, YouTube is a wealth of resources when it comes to makeup tutorials/guides/reviews by (mostly) independent people who just need to share their makeup obsessions. :)

I do know a bit about this one. Liquid eyeliner that comes with a brush is a PITA, but some of them have a felt tip which makes it much easier to apply. I used to use Collection 2000 Fast Stroke which was great until they changed the formula. I already knew that the Beauty Without Cruelty version was sadly not up to much, so I tried Mac Boot Black and that went on well but smudged more than anything else I've ever had on my eyes. After that I tried a bunch of different ones on my hand and ended up with 2True Effortless Waterproof Eyeliner from Superdrug, but I can only see the non-waterproof one on the site now. It's cheap enough that it might be worth trying anyway, or you could do like I did, try all the ones you can find and see what sticks.

If you prefer pencil, Urban Decay might be worth a try. I don't have the black so I can't vouch for it's anti-panda-eye properties, but I have the white and I was impressed with it's staying power on my water line.

Another option is gel, which you apply with an angled eyeliner brush. A lot of people rave about Mac Fluidline and my housemate uses it. She forgets she's wearing makeup and rubs her eyes all day, and it pretty much stays put. With gel it makes a difference what brush you use though. Mine is from Ecotools, who are annoyingly gimicky on the eco front but do make good and pretty cheap brushes, but Superdrug seems to have stopped selling those too. Of course, if you're going to a Mac shop you can get a brush from there. They're not cheap but get a lot of love.

How great! Thank you all very much.
Violette - do not get me tempted to go for procedures as I will go. I have heard about that one and you actually can not go out of the house for a week after. Your meant to wear proper high sun screen after it as well, even in winter, like a proper peel thing.

The eyeliner, Anika I will try all the ones you suggested. It's hell trying to find one that does not budge. I even thought of having semi-permanent eyeliner done at a staggering cost of 350.00! That is what put me off! The cost of it and the fact you can not go in a swimming pool for 6 weeks after having it done, so the woman told me. All that cost and no swimming, only to have to put eyeliner on anyhow if you want to go more vampish with the look.

I hate the fact that you can't get proper samples of makeup that you can use for a week to see if it's okay and does not result in a breakout or rash.  The money wasted on duff products.

I am off to look at superdrug as I have not been in a superdrug for many years!

No swimming? Weird.

Have you seen the eyelash dye kits they have in Boots? It's only a replacement for very light mascara but you get a few weeks with a little extra definition when you're not wearing make up. I got bored of doing it because the dye didn't easily coat my eyelashes, but it's not too bad and doesn't cost much either, so could be worth trying.

Abby

If you really want to try botox or another non-surgical procedure i'd say just go for it!  If you're thinking about it now you will probably end up doing it at some stage anyway; probably after you've spent a fortune on serums and creams and realised they don't work.  I'm not saying none of them work, i am a beauty product freak and i'm dying to try Prevage.  But my friend gets botox and she just loves it.  She doesn't go mad on it and doesnt think she's some sort of celebrity but it just makes her feel and look fresher and less lined (she's 35) and it does wonders for her confidence.    So if you want results straight away and its something you want to try anyway i'd bloody well go for it!  And then you can get some nice new make-up too which will make you feel even better.  YAY   ;D ;D ;D ;D

In fact it lightened my skin by a shade! I had to go and buy all new base. It is quite intense.
Good luck with whatever you do. But remember to do what makes you happiest.

Oh God, I have had botox and fillers! I used to be there every 4 months without fail up until 3 years ago where I decided a somewhat well off partner was not worth sticking with, not even for a botoxed forehead! Ha!

I have been looking at alternatives to the I can't squeeze my face when I cry look for the last 6 months and failed to find anything I believe will live up to the hype it says on the box it is wrapped up in. I am deeply sceptical that any cream will work but have been hopeful that one might slightly improve. I am gutted to say, it's all rubbish.
It is exactly as you say Cherry, I have sat and considered: what you pay out trying out new products amounts to what you would pay out going for botox. If you go to a professional for the botox, a proper clinic not a salon, they will do it so you can actually move your face, you can frown a bit and you will still have a few lines when you smile, it's a more natural look.
I will possibly end up back in the chair before the year is out as my experiment to find a cream that does it has fallen flat.

I have plumped for the Benefit eyeliner, give that a whirl, see if it makes me look like a panda after an hour. I am housebound (waiting on the phone to ring, you know how it goes - got a few kid free days so am refusing to move out of the place in case I get a last minute call...) so have ordered it online - that felt silly, ordering a tiny little pencil thing online. How decadent is it exactly having that delivered and not going out for it yourself!
I am still on the hunt for the perfect foundation!
I am as pale as snow anyhow Violette, if I go for one of those procedures and it lightens my skin by a shade or two, I might as well become a ghost and start to float about going 'Ohhh...' to the neighbours... Actually, that is not  a bad idea, I detest the neighbour to my left, she's an evil witch woman - perhaps she would move out!
