How about a Techie section?
« on: 02 October 2011, 01:07:36 am »
Wouldn't it be easier to have a separate section for technical queries? No doubt more threads will always crop up on how to build a web site, SEO (search engine optimization), mobile phone softwares, photo editing, twitter, blog etc, etc.

What do you all think?

i cant use the mouse to hit the arrow  to get the page to go back but it wont work
the only way i can get it to work is to reboot my laptop
it works fine for a few days then it gets stuck

If anybody wants to sign up with an anonymous nickname (bar Advertisers) they can - we can see it's you but otherwise nobody reading will know. We already have a ranting section, but as has been pointed out on another thread we have no way of knowing who is reading it - anybody can sign up here and merrily post away pretending to be a prossie and they do, too.

As for a techy section, I can see how it's a good idea to separate these sorts of questions from the main Q&A bit but then it isn't me who would have to to moderate it (or answer any of the questions, more than likely ;D). Every new bell and whistle that's added makes more work for somebody, and I would be concerned about the forum starting to get too confusing and fragmented for newbies - we are already having to move posts around regularly because they are being posted in the wrong sections, and I do suspect that this might make it even worse.

To be honest, you guys, although we have lots of women around here who are brilliant at all technological things, this isn't really the best place to come unless your problem is specifically to do with an escort-related website or other work-related thing. Hence the Adultwork section, cos we are certainly well-equipped to answer ten thousand AW queries a year. :D But if your computer isn't working, it really is better to take it to a professional who can have a look at it.

I know a fair bit about computers and the internet, though I'm no tech genius, but the last thing I want to spend my time doing is reading confusingly-worded descriptions of problems with random machines that I've never even seen in real life and then trying to actually fix those problems. Nightmare! You're better off Googling to find a techie forum, particularly one related to the hardware you're trying to get working or one with a section at least related to that sort of thing, and asking there cos it'll be full of geeks who enjoy nothing more than discussing confusing problems and offering helpful solutions.

I know this forum is a godsend when sex work is driving you out of your mind but there ARE other places and people on the internet (and even real life!). Good Google skills and being able to make an assessment of the websites that come up in the search results (are they likely to be reliable, do the people there seem mature and helpful, etc) are pretty much essential things these days. I can't actually remember the last time I had to ask someone a question because whether it's my wireless router acting up, or needing to find a branch of my bank, or wondering how to properly brew green tea, or finding out how much stamps actually cost these days, I just type in my question, scan the results, and end up knowing far more than I even wanted to. :P

I think creating, maintaining and updating a website is so much part and parcel of an escort's life now that questions about stuff like that should just go in the normal Q&A section. Things like Twitter and writing a blog shouldn't be complicated at all (although a sticky thread with people's Twitter names and blog links in the Babble section might be kind of cool and helpful for networking! I will look into that) so we could just compile a thread in the Articles section whenever people have queries about them and we'd end up with the material to write a comprehensive FAQ-type thing about it. Then if new questions pop up, the asker can be directed easily to the main Article thread or article on the main site if things get added or updated there.

I agree with this - even just typing your question into Google can bring up all sorts of stuff. When I upgraded my BlackBerry I found that my favourite ringtone noise had been dropped and was gutted; it took about thirty seconds on the CrackBerry forums to find a download of it and get it onto my new phone. The best we can do here really with most techy problems is direct people to the same forums, so it's the same result really, only with an unnecessary middle man.

I only meant techie stuff related to escorting. And no, I didn't expect moderators to solve queries, only to group techie topics into 1 section for easier access and management (or so I thought).

I thought it would be easier to just dump any old or ongoing threads into one separate section so you wouldn't need to write anything new just yet. But if you'd rather we compiled a thread in the Articles section then why not? Whatever makes it easiest to access previous and ongoing threads on call blocker software, twitter, moonfruit etc.

I don't know which is best and easiest to manage.
