Insulted someone by accident
« on: 18 July 2010, 05:32:14 am »
Every now again my filter between brain and mouth fails completly....
Got a call this eve and the guy was sluring and along with the welsh accent I really couldn't make out what he was saying and just sounded hammered. So I asked him 'are you pissed?' his response 'no I am disabled'

argh I feel horrible! Earth swallow me now!

Well that's one of those moments alright  ;D. Don't be too hard on yourself - if I had got a call like that late on a Saturday evening I would more than likely have thought exactly the same thing, and it's one reason I don't answer the phone after 8pm.

Maybe next time just politely say that you are having problems understanding what they are saying and are concerned that they may have been drinking (this is assuming you take bookings at short notice), rather than asking if they are pissed? Have a look through the TLC Trust site too - there is a good article here about seeing disabled clients with lots of good advice.

If it makes you feel better, I once hung up on what I thought was just another phone wanker only to find out that the gentleman had emphysema and breathing difficulties, plus way back when in my shopgirl days I asked a lady when she was due as I fitted her for a bra only to be stiffly told that she wasn't pregnant. Oops  ;D.
