I'm turning into a lizard...
« on: 23 February 2010, 11:17:20 pm »
Don't worry, not completely - it's just my legs! Think it's all the shaving that's been going on lately that's turning them a bit... scaly. Since things aren't likely to change, was wondering if anyone knows any tricks to stop this, or even good moisturisers? The only one I have in my flat at the moment smells heavenly... but that's about all it does, no matter how much I cover myself in! Any advice muchly appreciated!

One thing that seems to have stopped any shaving rush and scaly bits is that I non longer use shaving foam or gel but instead put on hair conditioner and then shave.  It was actually initially a desperate stand in as I had forgotten to bring shaving foam to the boudoir.  I now always use it and it just seems to be kinder to my skin.

I was having a similar problem after a while when I first started to work in Ireland, all that showering was doing my skin in. I now use Laroche-Posay-Lipikar Surgras-brilliant stuff, it is soap free and doesn't strip the skin, and is a wonderful shaving gel a well.
Laroche-Posay- Iso Urea-but use only if you have extreme dry skin, it is recommended by the Eczema Foundation in Ireland.
Or try the Lipikar Baume, which is nice and soothing. Larger Boots have this brand, or you can find it at your local pharmacy.
Good luck.

I started having the same problem when I moved to the UK. The air here is so much cooler/drier, my poor Texan skin didn't know what to think. I started shaving with extra virgin olive oil and it works like an absolute charm! It keeps my skin soft and moisturised- I don't even have to use lotion or anything like that anymore (I do anyway, to keep from smelling of olive oil). It also lasts a lot longer than your standard store-bought shaving gel/foam because a little goes a loooooong way and, if you leave your razor in a little cup with about three centimetres of oil in the bottom, it'll keep your blade from rusting.  :D

I use oil for shaving too. I've got a nice cobalt glass bottle with a pump that I got from Neil's Yard Remedies. It used to have some of their massage oil in it but now I just refill it with olive oil from the kitchen (don't worry if you don't have olive oil though). When I do my legs I use some good shaving gel over the oil, but for the ladygarden I like oil on its own.

Don't forget to exfoliate first before moisturising.

I like using coconut oil as a moisturiser, or if can't get hold of that I love Soap and Glory body butter, on offer at Boots at the moment.

I wonder if the dry skin has anything to do with showering?  I went to my parents for a long stay over Christmas and they only have a shower, and I normally have a bath.  By the time I left my legs were realy scaley.

Once I was back to having baths they sorted themselves out after a long soak and some body scrub.

Very weird.  Or maybe it's just me that's weird?

I love Johnsons Baby Oil Gel when I get out of the bath/shower. It's best to put it on damp skin. It's not expensive so using it after each appointment isn't going to break the bank  ;)

Hard water dries out the skin so if your parents live in a different area than you, that might explain the reason for your legs being dry and scaly.

Alexa it might be worth fitting a water softener to your water supply if the lotions and potions mentioned don't work.

I use hair conditioner/baby oil to shave and don't have as many problems with dry skin or shaving rashes as I used to. Maybe over shaving has something to do with it too. I'm not really sure. What I am sure of is that it can be damn hard bloody work this business. And that's before we've even let the client in the door lol  ;D

Good Luck! x
